Zane Smith was a pitcher for the Sycamores from 1980-82 and earned all-Missouri Valley Conference honors during the 1982 campaign in addition to garnering all-MVC Tournament honors that same season. That 1982 campaign saw Smith lead the Sycamores in three categories: strikeouts (71), innings pitched (91) and wins (nine).

Following that 1982 season, he was selected in the first round of the major league draft by the Atlanta Braves, where he began a 13-year career in the Major Leagues. In addition to playing for the Atlanta franchise, Smith played for the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He enjoyed his finest big league season in 1991, where he compiled a 16-10 won-lost record and earned a playoff victory as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his 13 years, he made 380 appearances posting a 3.74 career earned run average while recording 100 wins and 115 defeats.
