Rick Fernandes was among the top golfers in the Missouri Valley Conference from 1976-79.  He posted Indiana State's lowest stroke average in each of those three seasons, averaging 75.9 as a sophomore, 75.8 as a junior and went on to win the MVC Individual title in 1979.

Three times voted as the Sycamores' Most Valuable Player (1977-78-79), he qualified for the 1979 NCAA Individual Championships and, in the process, earning Golf Coaches Association of America all-America honors.

Following graduation, Fernandes continued to play the game, winning the Terre Haute City title in 1979 and 1980, winning the 1988 Indiana Assistants Professional Golf title, finishing as runner up in that event in 1989.  He also teamed with Todd Smith to win the 1991 Indiana PGA title.
