  • Graduate of Gerstmeyer High School, played for ISU Athletics Hall of Famer Howard Sharpe
  • Played on two NAIA National Tournament teams (1962, 1963)
  • An outstanding player at Indiana State. His college coach, Duane Klueh, asserts that Newton was "like a coach on the court" and "belongs in the Hall of Fame as a player."
  • Was an assistant at the University of New Orleans, who captured the Associated Press Division II national championship (1972)
  • Head coach at Murray State, posted a 116-65 record three NCAA tournament appearances and one NIT appearance
  • Won four Ohio Valley Conference regular season championships and three tournament titles
  • Named Athletics Director at University of Southern Indiana in 1995
  • Served on NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Advisory Committee
  • Inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2007
  • Inducted into the Murray State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010
