Brumfield finished his career as the all-time leading rusher in ISU history with 1,998 yards and in all-purpose yardage with 2,671. He led the Sycamores to a 9-1 record during his junior campaign of 1968, when he set a single-season record with 916 yards rushing.

That season marked the best winning percentage in school history and a Sycamore record eight-game winning streak. Brumfield also finished his career with a ISU record 26 touchdowns and the single-game rushing record of 182 yards. In addition, Brumfield also participated on the track team and during his sophomore campaign set an ISU record in the 100-yard dash and anchored the school-record 440-yard relay team.

Brumfield was drafted in the 10th round of the 1970 draft by the New Orleans Saints and became the first Sycamore in the NFL as he played one season in New Orleans before playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1971.
