Below is a brief description of certain services SAAS provides inside the Student-Athlete Support Center and with our campus partners in the Center for Student Success.Â
Â
Study HallÂ
Head coaches determine study hall requirements for their teams while SAAS staff provides a quiet location and oversight support. Study hall is housed within both the Student-Athlete Support Center and reserved classrooms inside the building. Â
Â
Secondary AdvisementÂ
The SAAS staff serve as secondary advisors for student-athletes. In a complementary role to the primary advisor, SAAS staff will review schedules to help avoid class and sport conflicts. The secondary advisor role includes helping students improve their preparation skills ahead of advising appointments and reviewing course and major change requests to help monitor NCAA continuing eligibility requirements.Â
Â
Small GroupÂ
The Small Group program is designed to help freshmen and transfers transition into ISU by joining a group of student-athletes from similar academic interests across different teams. Led by an upperclassmen student-athlete in each group, the goal is to attack potential problems before they occur and to help our Sycamores become well-organized students. Small groups work together in preparing their week ahead and discussing their ongoing experiences as a student-athlete, including mental health and building authentic relationships with other students. Â
Â
TutoringÂ
Tutoring in traditional courses is provided on both an individual and group basis in the Center for Student Success at Normal Hall and in the Math and Writing Center. Study groups for courses with high student-athlete enrollment (i.e., psychology, history, life sciences, etc.) are conducted regularly. Tutors are available either by appointment during the day, or on a walk-in basis during evening sessions. Â
Â
Learning Disability ServicesÂ
If a student-athlete has a special need, such as a documented learning disability, SAAS staff members work closely with Accessibility Resource Office (ARO) as a connector with the student-athlete to provide them with special assistance. These services may include skills assessment, proofreading services, and use of mini-cassette recorders, careful academic monitoring, test reading and proctoring services, as well as counseling services.Â
