Mel Blickenstaff, a native of North Manchester, Indiana, was the head athletic trainer at Indiana State University from 1962 until his retirement in May 1978.

Blickenstaff, who was a trainer for the United States team at the Montreal Summer Olympic Games in 1976 as well as working at numerous national and international events, was inducted into the United States Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame in 1978.

As well as being an associate professor of Physical Education at Indiana State, Blickenstaff was the coordinator of two athletic training curriculums at the school.

A coach, teacher, and trainer at several high schools in Indiana and Ohio, Blickenstaff served as a Physical Reconditioning Instructor for the United States Air Force during World War II.

A noted lecturer and author on athletic training, Blickenstaff has been honored by many organizations for his advancements in his field.
