Roy Burris was without much doubt the best athlete at Indiana State during the 1920’s. Burris was a standout in track, baseball and basketball from 1922-1925. On the hardwood, during his first season he earned the Bigwood Award as the Sycamores’ most valuable player. He then received all-state recognition in 1923 and 1924 after leading ISU in scoring both seasons.

Burris played three years of baseball for the Sycamores and made a great reputation at the plate and also tracking down balls as a speedy centerfielder. He displayed his pure speed on the track as well as he set the ISU record in the 220-yard dash (21.4) and the 200-yard low hurdles (24.8) in 1924.

Burris went on to have outstanding professional careers in both baseball and basketball. After finishing school, he played baseball from 1925-1928 in three different leagues. He went on to play professional basketball from 1928-33 for the Akron Firestone Non-Skids, and won the national industrial championship in 1933.
