Bill Hayes was a two-time all-Missouri Valley Conference selection, earning said honors in 1977 and 1978.  He also earned all-Missouri Valley Conference Tournament honors during the 1977 and 1978 MVC Tournaments. 

An ironman behind the plate, he played in every game during the 1977 and 1978 seasons.  In 1978, he batted .317 with 13 home runs and 48 runs batted in, while allowing just three stolen bases out of 22 attempts.  He was selected as a member of the 1977 U.W. Intercontinental World Games team. 

Hayes was selected in the first-round in the 1978 Major League Draft by the Chicago Cubs, the first catcher to be chosen and the 13th selection overall.  He spent a total of 10 years (1978-87) as a player in the professional ranks and saw major league action with the Cubs in both 1980 and 1981.
