Hanna earned NAIA All-American honors as a sophomore in 1965 by finishing second in the nation.

He followed with an incredible senior campaign where he earned NCAA All-American honors after winning the national championship and setting a then ISU and Indiana Collegiate record of 16’-3 ¾”. Hanna went on to compete in national competition as he won the Canadian Indoor National Championship in both 1968 and 1969 and finished second at the U.S. National Championships in 1968.
