A former Indiana All-State football player, while at ISU Fred Wampler led the state in scoring in 1929.  He was a four-sport star at the University and won 12 varsity numerals.

Wampler was a successful high school football coach at Terre Haute Gerstmeyer High School and at two schools in Ohio. His 1946 Gerstmeyer team finished fourth in the state.

A former sports director of WTHI radio in Terre Haute, Wampler later served as a United States Representative from the 6th Congressional District of Indiana, which included Terre Haute.

Wampler spent several years in the employ of both the Federal and State governments of Ohio and Indiana.  From 1963-70 he was the Regional Coordinator for the U. S. Department of the Interior under the directives of The Honorable Stuart Udell, former Secretary of the Interior.

Serving also with the Ohio Departments of Natural Resources and Transportation, Wampler retired in 1976.
