A pioneer in women's athletics at Indiana State, Lammers was a student-athlete from 1902-1905. Lammers was one of the first five women ever to receive a letter for participation in athletics. She received an "N" for the ISU Normal School.

In 1903, Lammers played in the first women's intercollegiate basketball game against DePauw.

After leaving Indiana State she created the Maybelle Steeg Lammers award in 1923. This award is given yearly to an outstanding female student in physical education.

The daughter of former Terre Haute mayor Henry Steeg, Lammers died in 1935 while living in Terre Haute.
