Wally Marks is one of the most famous coaches and players in the Midwest, having played on a Big 10 championship football team, coached four sports at ISU, and officiated the 1960 Rose Bowl game.
 
Marks was a graduate of the University of Chicago and captained Amos Alonzo Stagg's 1926 team and was a sophomore fullback on the school's last Big 10 winner in 1924.
 
Coach Marks was affiliated with Indiana State University for 44 years. He coached football 19 years, baseball 15 years, and basketball and golf nine years each.  He had a record of 62-56-7 in football and 90-58 in basketball. He was also a Big 10 football official for 16 years.
 
Working his way up through the Physical Education department at Indiana State, Marks was named Chairman of the Men's Physical Education Department in 1952, then Dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1965.
 
Marks retired in 1971 from Indiana State where the track and field and cross team's competition and practice field bears his name.

  • Coached US Air Force in 1945 to a 17th ranking nationally.

  • Former players and friends established the Dr. Walter E. Marks Scholarship Fund at Indiana State 

  • Officiated the 1960 Rose Bowl 

  • Fullback on University of Chicago Big 10 Football Championship (1924) 

  • Captain in 1926 under Head Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg 

  • Inducted into Hall of Fame Inaugural Class October 29, 1982
