Charles Warthan was a student-athlete at Indiana State from 1967 to 1971, competing on the Sycamore cross country and track & field teams. During his collegiate career, Warthan broke every distance event record from the mile to the marathon.
 
In 1970, Warthan became the first runner from Indiana State to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships as he placed 41st in the six-mile event at William & Mary. He also competed in the 1971 NCAA Cross Country Championship, placing 72nd at Tennessee.
 
Warthan was a four-time cross country most valuable player and three-time conference champion. He served as the team captain in 1971 and won 11 cross country meets during the season.
 
In 1976, Warthan competed in marathon at the U.S. Olympic Trials where he placed 22nd. He won the Marathon-Marathon in 1972.
 
Warthan is one of the most decorated and respected coaches in Indiana and was inducted into the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004. The 1980 Bloomington North men’s cross country team won the IHSAA state championship and was inducted into the National High School Association Hall of Fame in 2012 as a national champion. Warthan was also inducted as a coach by the National High School Association in 2012.
