A record-setting quarterback for the Indiana State football teams in the late '60's, Verbie led Indiana State to its best-ever record of 9-1 under Coach Jerry Huntsman in 1968, then followed that with a 6-3-1 mark during his senior season the next year. He was named the football team's "Most Valuable Player" during both those campaigns.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Verbie held virtually every passing record on the ISU books at that time. He still holds the single game total offense mark of 303 yards versus Central Michigan.  His other marks included single game and season records for passing and total offense efforts for the season and career in total offense.

After graduation he returned to Indiana State as an assistant coach under Huntsman to tutor the quarterbacks.  The former ISU Captain earned his B.S. in Physical Education in 1970.

At the time of his induction, Verbie had been recently named head football coach of Dayton (OH) Jefferson High School.
