Jim Ulrich earned NCAA Small College all-America honors, placing third in the javelin and seventh in the discus at the 1968 NCAA Championships.  He is the school record holder for the javelin (using the 'old' javelin), having recorded a distance of 241 feet 3 inches in 1968.  Ulrich was also a three-time Big State Champion in the javelin (1967-68-69). 

Following his ISU career, Ulrich went on to become head track and field coach at SUNY-Fredonia, where he enjoyed a 25-year career.  During that time, he led teams to 20 consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference team championships while developing 68 All-Americans.  He also served 15 seasons at the Buffalo Bills training camp and represented the sport of track and field on the President's Council on Ethics and Sportsmanship in Athletics.
