TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State men won nine events and the women eight as the Sycamores captured the men's and women's championships of the 2012 Pacesetter Quadrangular at Marks Field Saturday on the campus of Indiana State University.
The meet started off on the wet side with the men's and women's pole vault moved indoors as strong thunderstorms moved through the area. The weather did improve, however, and the meet was resumed outdoors by 1 p.m. with even a hint or two of sunshine.
The team competition came down to a dual meet between Missouri Valley Conference rivals Indiana State and Southern Illinois with the Sycamores pulling away late in both the men's and women's divisions to earn their respective title.
The Indiana State women captured the 2012 Pacesetter Quadrangular title with 229.5 points with Southern Illinois coming in second with 204.5. Wisconsin-Milwaukee was third with 107 points and Butler finished fourth with 76.
The Sycamore men took first place with 237.5 points with Southern Illinois second with 187.50, Wisconsin-Milwaukee third at 136 and Butler fourth with 61 points.
The Indiana State women won six events on the track and two field events during the second day of the Pacesetter Quadrangular.
Leeann Michl won the women's 800 meters in a meet record time of 2:08.05, breaking former Sycamore Erica Moore's time of 2:09.21 set in 2010. Butler's Kirsty Legg was second (2:12.99) with SIU's Mobola Rotibi third (2:14.00) and Sycamore Kaci Smith fourth (2:14.38).
Stacia Weatherford set a new meet record in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 59.40 which is second best time in Indiana State history. She broke Nicholette Chambers (Ohio State) record of 1:00.95 set in 2003. Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Calaneta Burrows was a distant second (1:01.24) with SIU's Evelyn Scott third (1:05.03). Sycamore Brittany Housel was fourth (1:05.19).
Kristy Twitchell led a 1-2 finish in the women's 1500 meters for the Sycamores as she ran a career best 4:36.35 with teammate Kacie Klem second (4:37.71). Butler's Shelbi Burnett was third (4:40.79) with ISU's Kalli Dalton fourth (4:42.08).
Jaquelle Spencer won the women's 100 meters as the senior finished in 12.29 with Southern Illinois' Amiris Warren second (12.34) and the Salukis Nirupama Sunderraj third (12.65). ISU's Kaisha Martin was eighth (12.96).
Macey Black picked up the win in the women's 200 meters with a personal best time of 25.48 with SIU's Tess Shubert second (25.63) and the Saluki's Lauren Cheadle third (26.20). ISU's Ja'liza Prophet finished ninth (27.19).
Shelby Higginbottom, Kaci Smith, Brittany Housel, and Leeann Michl ran to victory in the women's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:52.51 with Southern Illinois second (3:56.99).
Richelle Kimble claimed the women's pole vault title by clearing 12-feet-10-inches (3.91 meters) with teammate Hannah McKnight tying for third (11-feet-4¼-inches) with SIU's Caselyn Harding. Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Courtney Fisher was second (11-feet-4¼-inches).
Tara Perigo won the women's javelin with a distance of 125-feet-2-inches (38.15 meters) with Sycamore teammate Rachael Johnson third (104-feet-5-inches). Southern Illinois' Mallory Dreyer was second (120-feet-4-inches).
The Sycamore men won five track events and three field events Saturday on their way to claiming the Pacesetter team title.
Indiana State swept the top three spots of the men's 1500 meters with each Sycamore setting a personal best. Craig Padgett took control on the final lap and posted the win (3:54.41) with Drew Gambill surging late to take second (3:55.52), and Albaro Escalera finishing in third place (3:56.37).
Devin Price, Kevin Piraino, Justin Baxtron, and Andrew Stull combined to win the men's 4x100 meter relay in the 11th fastest time in school history (40.91). Wisconsin-Milwaukee was second (41.68) with Southern Illinois third (41.71).
Stull was also a winner in the men's 200 meters with a time of 21.76, outrunning Sycamore teammate Justin Baxtron who was second in 21.88. SIU's Ryan Sidwell finished third 22.20.
Kevin Piraino took the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 48.54 while teammate Ryan Henrickson ws third (49.48). Southern Illinois' Ryan Sidwell was second (48.86).
Greggmar Swift ran to victory in the men's 110 meter high hurdles (14.10) with teammate Duane Brown third (14.66). Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Durell Busby was second (14.32).
Piraino, Arqeil Shaw, Ray Skamay and Max Tuttle earned a dominating win in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:18.33 with Southern Illinois second I 3:24.37.
Ernest Rollins won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49-feet-3¾-inches (15.03 meters). Douglas Palacious of Southern Illinois was second (49-feet-1½-inches) with Saluki's Maxim Bakana third (48-feet-10¾-inches). ISU's Kevin Piraino was sixth (44-feet-7½-inch).
Jordan Colanese won the men's javelin with a throw of 173-feet-5-inches (52.87) with SIU's Dean Jordan second (170-feet-4-inches). Kevin Selby was third for ISU (150-feet-0-inches).
In other events for the Sycamores:
Jaquelle Spencer, Macey Black, Taylor Gilles, and Kaisha Martin combined for a second place finish in the women's 4x100 meter relay (47.53) which was won by Southern Illinois (46.87).
Weatherford finished second by one-hundredth of a second in the women's 100 meter hurdles (14.22) as SIU's Malaikah Love out leaned the Sycamore at the stripe (14.21). Sycamore Carmelia Stewart finished fourth (14.74).
Black was third in the women's 400 meters (57.31) with Shelby Higginbottom fourth (57.90) and Toni Tillett ran a personal best for fifth (1:01.30). Southern Illinois' Tess Shubert won the event (55.45) with Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Lauren Grant second (56.90).
Indiana State's Mary Theisen took second in the women's discus with a throw of 162-feet-2-inches (49.42) with SIU's Jeneva McCall winning with a meet record throw of 177-feet (53.95). Sycamore Felisha Johnson finished sixth (140-feet-3-inches).
Nikki Snearley, Rachael Johnson, and Kelly Steffen each cleared 5-feet-5-inches (1.65 meters) in the women's high jump with Snearley placing third, Johnson fourth and Steffen fifth. It was a personal best for Steffen and Snearley while Johnson tied her personal best. SIU's Kenya Culmer won the event (5-feet-8 ¾-inches) with Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Laura Hamel second (5-feet-7-inches).
Shalesa Smith finished fourth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 38-feet-8 ¾-inches (11.80) which was won the SIU's Malaikah Love (40-feet-9-inches) and the Salukis Kenya Culmer was second (39-feet-8¾-inches). Carmelia Stewart was seventh for ISU (35-feet-9½-inches).
Devin Price lost by just two-thousandths of a second in the men's 100 meters (11.04) as Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Matt Ferry took the win by an eyelash. Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Washington Farrington was third (11.08) and ISU's Leo Cordova was fourth (11.18).
Jeremiah Vaughan ran the fifth fastest 800 meter time in ISU history and a personal best at 1:50.89 but still finished second behind Butler's Tom Curr (1:50.57) who set a new meet record with the winning effort. Brad Adams was fourth for the Sycamores (1:52.95).
Sycamore Max Tuttle was second in the men's 400 meter hurdles in 53.65 as he finished just behind UWM's Dexter Schleis (52.67). ISU's Ray Skamay finished fourth (53.88).
Wes Schenck finished fourth in the men's pole vault by clearing a career best 15-feet-7¼-inches (4.76 meters) with teammate Tucker Field sixth (14-feet-7½-inches). Southern Illinois' Cody Doerflein won the event (16-feet-5¼-inches).
Brandon Pounds finished second by just one centimeter in the men's discus as the Sycamore had a throw of 164-fee-6-inches (50.14 meters) and SIU's Curtis Wideman also had an English measurement of 164-feet-6 but a metric of 50.15 meters. Sycamore Chris Fields was third (154-feet-4-inches).
Robert Webb cleared a personal best height of 6-feet-8¾-inches (2.05 meters) to take second behind Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Nick Hughes (6-feet-10 ¾-inches). Jamal Hampton tied for third for the Sycamores (6-feet-4¾-inches).
Indiana State will compete at Indiana University next weekend in the Polytan Invitational.
