TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? Senior Daryl Truitt was one of over a dozen members of the Indiana State track & field team to be honored Saturday evening at the conclusion of the 2011 Pacesetter Invitational and he made the most of his day in the spotlight, winning the 100 meters and then leading off the 4x100 meter relay to a winning effort.
Truitt's two victories were part of seven wins by the Sycamore men at the unscored meet at Marks Field on the campus of Indiana State University Saturday.
Not to be outdone by her senior male counterpart, Sycamore senior Kelsey Hanley won the women's hammer throw and finished third in the women's discus. She was part of four wins earned by the Indiana State women on the day.
Truitt cruised to a win in the 100 meters with a time of 10.96 seconds and then led off the 4x100 meter relay team that included Kevin Piraino, Shaun Smith, and Andrew Stull as they won in 41.29 seconds.
Hanley won the hammer throw over sophomore teammate Felisha Johnson with a throw of 189'-9” (57.83 meters) while Johnson went 189'-7” (57.78 meters). Hanley was also the top ISU finisher in the women's discus with a toss of 153'-7” (46.81 meters).
Stull picked up a win for the Sycamore men in the 200 meters (21.84) with Justin Baxtron fourth (22.03). Baxtron was also fourth in the 100 meters (11.11). Jeremiah Vaughan ran a personal best 3:50.56 in the 1500 meters to capture the event and led a sweep of the top four spots by the Sycamores as Corey Hahn was second (3:55.14), Dustin Betz third (3:56.02), and Michael Disher fourth (3:56.88). Drew Gambill was second in the 800 meters (1:53.35).
Michael Roberts led ISU in the 110 meter hurdles with a second place finish (14.80) with Greggmar Swift returning to action and finishing third (14.82). Max Tuttle ran to a second place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (52.79) with Jonathan Jackson third (53.12), and Maurice Lyke fourth (53.36). Craig Padgett had a personal best 9:47.28 in finishing second in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
The Indiana State 4x400 meter relay team of Keenan Johnson, Jackson, Brad Adams, and Tuttle won the event in 3:15.59.
Sycamore junior Major Clay established a new personal best by clearing 7'-3.25” (2.22 meters) in winning the high jump competition which is the third best all-time. He made several good attempts at the meet record 7'-5.25” (2.27 meters) but was unable to clear the bar. Jamal Hampton and Robert Webb both cleared 6'-4.75” (1.95 meters) to tie for third.
Freshman Nigel Jolly established a new personal best as he won the long jump with a leap of 23'-6” (7.165 meters). Shayne Cureton was third at 23'-0” (7.01 meters), Piraino fourth at 21'-10.75” (6.67 meters), and Ernest Rollins fourth at 21'-2.5” (6.46 meters). Each ISU competitor in the long jump established a new personal best.
Jeremy Pratt tied for first in the pole vault by clearing 15'-7.75” (4.77 meters) with Drew LaMaster third at 15'-1.75” (4.62 meters). Jordan Colanese was the other winner for ISU as he set a new personal best in winning the javelin at 169'-3” (51.58 meters). Kevin Selby was second in the javelin with a personal best 153'-1” (46.67 meters). Chris Fields was the top thrower for ISU with a fifth place finish in the discus at 159'-5” (48.59 meters).
The Indiana State women won both hurdle events on the day with Stacia Weatherford winning the 100 meter hurdles in 14.62 and Brittany Housel running the 11th fastest time in school history of 1:03.04 to take the 400 meter hurdles.
Kristy Twitchell established a personal best of 2:17.68 in finishing second in the 800 meters while senior Kelsie Slater was second in the 1500 meters with a personal best time of 4:45.28. The 4x400 meter relay team of Shelby Higginbottom, Rachel Posey, Leeann Michl, and Kaci Smith was second in 3:49.83.
Rachael Johnson and senior Chenelle Martin tied for third in the high jump by clearing 5'-3.75” (1.62 meters). Nicole Hope was second in the pole vault after clearing 12'-8.25” (3.87 meters) with senior Alicia Fritschi coming in fourth by clearing 11'-2.5” (3.42 meters).
Felisha Johnson won the shot put for ISU with a heave of 49'-11.25” (15.22 meters) and Rachael Johnson was third in the javelin with a personal best throw of 110'-2” (33.59 meters) which is the fourth best in school history.
The Sycamores will have a split squad next weekend with some members of the Indiana State team travelling to the Drake Relays (Thursday-Saturday) while the rest of the squad competes at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis on Saturday.
