What's on the Schedule
"This is the best Spring course lineup we have ever had," said Coach Towne. "It includes two Robert Trent Jones Trail courses, the venerable Ozark National, as well as an ocean course at Pawleys Plantation … and a PGA TOUR stop for our conference championship. I'm excited for the team to get the opportunity to experience them."
The Sycamores will head to Pawleys Island, South Carolina to open their spring slate, playing for the first time at the Battle of the Beach on the Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club course. The following week, Indiana State will play in the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate in Huntsville, Alabama, also for the first time in the program's history. That tournament will be played at the RTJ Golf Trail at Hampton Cove.
A few days later, the team will take a trip to Glencoe, Alabama for the Chris Banister Golf Classic, held at the Silver Lakes Golf Course. The Sycamores last competed in this tournament in 2009-10, opening that season tying for fourth place in the event.
The golfers will be off for just over 10 days before heading to the beautiful Ozarks National Golf Course in Hollister, Missouri. This will be the fifth-straight season Indiana State has competed in the tournament. The Sycamores will look to bounce back on this course following a 10th-place finish a season ago.
Indiana State will take a two-and-a-half-week hiatus and will return to the course here in Terre Haute for the Indiana State Invitational. This will be the 12th year in a row the Sycamores host a tournament in town (doesn't include the season when spring golf was canceled to do the coronavirus), again being held at the Country Club of Terre Haute.
The team has played well on their home course in recent years, finishing as a top three team in each of the last four seasons.
Sophia Florek and
Alana Gilbert both tied in sixth place last season, shooting a 149. Since the first year hosting this tournament (2013-14), Indiana State has never finished in the bottom half of the field, with eight top three finishes.
Finally, Indiana State will head to the new location of the MVC Championship - Silvas, Illinois and the TPC Deere Run course. TPC Deere Run is a PTA Tour course, famous for hosting the John Deere Classic. The Championship is being held from April 19-21. Last season,
Yang Tai led the Sycamores in the tournament placing 25th with a three-day 231.
Recapping the Fall
- Comparing the four fall tournaments to recent years' full seasons, Indiana State finished the fall shooting a 309.1 as a team. That average is the best so far dating back through the 2015-16 season.
- The Sycamores finished in the top half in three of the four tournaments, highlighted by a second-place finish at the Toledo Rocket Classic.
- Junior Sophia Florek led the team this fall in scoring average, playing in all 10 rounds averaging a 76.1. Senior Yang Tai was second with a 76.7.
- Yang Tai and Alana Gilbert are the only two with two top 10 finishes from the fall.
- Tai – 6th at Butler Fall Invitational and T6 Toledo Rocket Classic
- Gilbert – T10 at Toledo Rocket Classic and T7 at Braun Intercollegiate
- Freshman Keira Brazeau competed in each tournament last fall.
- Gabby Cone ended her fall on the highest of note, playing the best golf through her collegiate career. She tied for 14th, the lowest finish so far. Her score of 157 is her best two-round tournament as a Sycamore.
