LAWRENCE, Kan. – Indiana State baseball saw its four-game win streak come to an end Friday afternoon at Hoglund Park, falling to Kansas 6-1. Kansas used a six-run fifth inning to gain the edge and did not allow another run to cross the plate.
After three scoreless innings at the park, junior
Jordan Schaffer opened the fourth inning with a triple to left field before
Miguel Rivera drove him in with a ground-rule double. That would be all that the Sycamores would be able to get offensively as Ryan Cyr (1-2) limited ISU to just five base hits in six and a third innings. The right-hander struck out just one batter and walked two as he picked up his first win of the season.
Sycamore starting pitcher
Tristan Weaver did not surrender a base hit until the fifth inning when Zach Hanna drove a ball up the middle with two outs. Blaine Ray would move him all the way to third on a single to left center before the game-tying run would cross on a wild pitch before a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases.
ISU went to the bullpen for right-hander
Austin Cross and Kansas was able to push across the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk. Anthony Tulimero broke things open with a two-RBI single through the right side. Following a walk ISU went to the bullpen for
Zach Frey and Kansas immediately answered with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring the fifth and sixth runs of the game.
Nathan Barry closed out the game on the mound for the Jayhawks (6-6) going the final two and two-third innings and allowing just one hit.
Weaver fell to 1-1 on the season after going four and two-third innings, allowing four earned runs while retiring three on strikeouts.
Ross Kramer struck out all three batters he faced in relief while
Max Klein and
Matt Jachec each went an inning in relief for the Sycamores.
The Sycamores will look to even the series Saturday. First pitch with the Jayhawks is set for 3 p.m. ET.
