TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will make their way to Terre Haute for the second consecutive year this weekend, May 10-12, as the Sycamores will be seeking two championships on their home track.
Â
Earlier in the week, the Indiana State women were picked to finish second at the championships, and the men were chosen third in the MVC Pre-Championship poll of conference coaches. The Northern Iowa men have been voted to finish atop the standings this weekend, while Illinois State is the favorite on the women's side. In its history, Indiana State has won 17 total MVC Outdoor titles – 10 men's titles and seven women's titles – with the last men's win coming in 2014 and the last women's victory one year earlier in 2013.
Â
On the track, the ISU women will be led by distance standout
Brooke Moore and hurdler
Ayanna Morgan. Moore is having a strong senior year, entering the weekend with the top time in the Valley in the 1500-meter run at 4:23.70. She has also run the second-fastest time in the conference in the women's 800-meter run at 2:07.93 from the Gibson Invitational.
Â
Morgan, a senior hurdler, has been a consistent performer for the blue and white throughout the season in the 100-meter hurdles. The Barbados owns the second-fastest time in the conference and third-best time in school history in the event with a time of 13.67 from the Ole Miss Classic in March.
Â
The dynamic duo of
Cassaundra Roper and
Erin Reese will look to dominate the throwing events for the women once more this season. Roper has solidified herself as one of the top shot putters in Indiana State history this season, as the redshirt senior owns the top mark in the MVC at 16.44m (53-11.25) which is also 14th in the NCAA East Region and 27th in the nation.
Â
Also having a stellar senior campaign, Reese is ranked in the top-25 nationally in two events. In the discus throw, Reese finds herself with the second-best mark in the Valley and school-record toss of 56.45m (185-02) and it is also sixth in the East and 16th in the NCAA. She is also second in the conference in the hammer throw due to her throw of 63.56m (208-06). Her throw also lands at 15th in the East Region and 24th in the country.
Â
On the men's side, the Trees will be led on the track by distance star
Akis Medrano, hurdler
Matthew Lewis-Banks, and sprinter
JaVaughn Moore. Medrano will look to defend his MVC title in the 10K on Friday night and the senior enters the championships with the fifth-fastest time in the Missouri Valley of 29:46.48 and 48th in the East. Then on Sunday, Medrano will race in the 5K where he enters the top seed behind a performance of 14:10.96 from the Drake Relays, which is second in Sycamore history.
Â
Running in the hurdles, Lewis-Banks will once again find himself in a battle with Connor Ham of Northern Iowa, as Ham enters with a time of 14.10 and Lewis-Banks finds himself at 14.12. The freshman's time of 14.12 is also 49th in the East Region.
Â
Fellow freshman
JaVaughn Moore enters as the fastest athlete in the championships in the 100-meter dash. The Georgia native owns a time of 10.52 from the Ole Miss Classic, and he is also fourth in the 200-meter dash with his time of 21.52.
Â
Sam Overton and
Callan Whitehouse will be the leaders for the men in the field this weekend. Overton will have a chance to defend his MVC crown in the javelin throw on Friday, as he opens with the farthest mark in the MVC of 54.88m (180-01). Overton will also compete in the hammer throw and shot put at the championships.
Â
In the pole vault, Whitehouse, the freshman, enters with the ninth-best vault in school history of 5.00m (16-04.75) which also gives him the fourth-best vault in the MVC and 46th-best mark in the NCAA East.
Â
Action on Friday gets underway at 10 a.m. ET with the men's decathlon with the women's heptathlon to follow at 11 a.m. Field events will begin at noon with the men's hammer throw. Admission to the MVC Championships on Friday is $5 for adults and $3 for children/students.
