The Road To Eugene
Kieran Barnewall's first season as a Sycamore was one of the best freshman seasons for a hurdler in program history, culminating with his upcoming appearance at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships. Barnewall clocked top-10 program ranks in both the indoor 60m hurdles (7.91) and outdoor 110m hurdles (13.88) as a freshman on his way to earning all-conference honors and qualifying for the NCAA East First Round.

Barnewall was part of a Sycamore hurdles group which consistently ranked in the top 20 nationally this season, reaching as high as No. 3 in the USTFCCCA EventSquad rankings. He finished second at the MVC Outdoor Championships as Indiana State took the top four spots in the event, then followed by finishing with the fourth-fastest time among freshmen at the NCAA East First Round.

Barnewall earned the automatic qualifying spot for Canada in the 110m hurdles by winning the event at the Canada U20 Championships. The top seed in the event, Barnewall ran times of 13.64 and 13.66 in June to claim the title and clinch his spot in Eugene.

Looking Ahead
Indiana State's future is bright, with Barnewall being one of three rising sophomores who saw success for the Sycamores on the national stage during the summer season.

Aaron Massiah was the most recent of those successes, earning gold in the triple jump and silver in the long jump at the Barbados National Championships after previously claiming bronze in the triple jump at the CARIFTA Games, while Theo Thurmond carded a top-10 finish in the discus at the USATF U20 Championships.
