DES MOINES, Iowa – Indiana State had two student-athletes named All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team as
Leslie Sims and
Bella Peterson were recognized by the league for their outstanding season. Additionally,
Shaye Barton was named to the league's All-Defensive Team.
Â
For Sims, it marks her second all-conference honor in as many years after being named to the second team last season as a freshman. For Peterson, she garners first team honors in her true freshman year.
Â
Sims finished the regular season batting .404 – one of the best single-season averages in school history – and is one of only six players in the nation to steal more than 20 bases and never be thrown out on the base paths this year (she is 24-for-24). Her 65 hits leave her just five away from the school's single-season record and her places her 48
th nationally and second in the conference. As good as her batting average is – and it's good – it is even better around the league as she hit .441 in conference games only.
Â
Peterson garnered first team honors after finishing the regular season leading the league and ranked 127
th nationally in doubles per game (0.27), second in The Valley in total doubles (12), seventh in batting average (.365) and ninth in slugging percentage (.548). Her seven outfield assists leads all Sycamore outfielders and is among the leaders of all Missouri Valley Conference outfielders. She was even more impressive in Valley play, posting a .397 average in league games.
Â
Barton garners All-Defensive Team honors after the junior third baseman as her defensive play at the hot cormer was among the most consistent in the league. She posted a .982 fielding percentage during the regular season, an impressive mark at one of the field's most challenging positions, and only committed errors in two games throughout the year.
Â
It marks the first time since 2009 that Indiana State has received multiple all-conference first team honors and only the second time in the history of the program.
