Junior Nicole Hope becomes second Sycamore
to clear 13' in women's pole vault

BLOOMINGTON, IND. ? The Indiana State men's track & field teams started the day in fourth place and nearly brought home second, surging past the Missouri Tigers and almost catching the Michigan State Spartans to finish third in the men's division of the Indiana Invitational which concluded today. The Sycamore women also entered the final day of competition in fourth but could not climb out of that spot by the end of the competition.
Senior Michael Roberts was the only winner for Indiana State on the day as he won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.57. Freshman Max Tuttle, who won the 400 meter hurdles Saturday night, finished fifth (15.19).
The home standing Hoosiers won the men's team title with 189 points with second place coming down to a battle between the Michigan State Spartans and the Indiana State Sycamores. Michigan State was able to outscore ISU by two points, 161-159, to take second while Missouri finished fourth with 153 points.
“It was a great team competition,” John McNichols, Indiana State men's track & field coach, said. “We had many, many places where we could have done better but we did have some great individual efforts during the day.”
Indiana and Michigan State went toe-to-toe in the women's division with the Hoosiers holding off the Spartans to take the team title with 203.50 points. Michigan State was second with 201 points with Missouri scoring 135 to take third and Indiana State 130.50 points for fourth place.
“We competed better today but we still seemed a little sluggish,” Angie Martin, Indiana State women's track & field coach, said. “I don't think we prepared well enough for a Saturday-Sunday meet but we still had some very good individual efforts. Next week should be a fun week with home meet. It will be a chance to mix people up, run some different events, and have some fun competition at home.”
In men's track events Sunday: junior Shaun Smith was second (10.81) and senior Daryl Truitt fourth (10.83) in the 100 meters, junior Andrew Stull was third (21.58) and Smith sixth (21.97) in the 200 meters, freshman Keenan Johnson finished fifth (48.57) and freshman Ray Skamay eighth (50.28) in the 400 meters, freshman Brad Adams fifth (1:53.86) and junior Corey Hahn sixth (1:54.86) in the 800 meters, and senior Michael Disher was third (8:59.21) and sophomore Dustin Betz eighth (9:25.62) in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
In men's field events, junior Major Clay tied his personal best and the meet record by clearing 7'-3” (2.21 meters) to win the high jump competition. Sophomore Robert Webb cleared 6'-6.75” (2.00 meters) to finish seventh. Junior Ernest Rollins had the ninth best jump in school history when he went 49'-9” (15.16 meters) to finish second in the triple jump. Freshman Kevin Piraino was fifth at 45'-9.7” (13.96 meters).
Freshman Nigel Jolly was second (23'-0.5”/7.02 meters) and freshman Shayne Cureton third (22'-9.75”/6.95 meters) in the long jump, freshman Chris Fields was sixth (47'-7.25”/14.57 meters)and freshman Justin Applegate 10th (36'-7”/11.15 meters) in the shot put, and Fields placed sixth (156'-6”/48.01 meters) with Applegate ninth (140'-1”/40.71 meters) in the discus.
The Sycamore 4x400 meter relay team of Johnson, freshman Jonathan Jackson, freshman Brian Martin, and Tuttle was third with a time of 3:15.21.
In women's track events, sophomore Leeann Michl ran the eighth fastest 800 meter time in school history with a 2:11.86 time and a fourth place finish on Sunday. Junior Kaci Smith ran the 18th fastest time in school history of 2:15.23 to finish eighth. Sophomore Stacia Weatherford ran the 15th fastest 400 meter time in school history of 56.72 to finish fourth in the event while freshman Brittany Housel also set a personal best with a time of 59.21 in finishing ninth.
Senior Kelsie Slater ran the fourth fastest time and junior Kristy Twitchell the sixth fastest time in the 3000 meter steeplechase as Slater finished fourth in 11:14.29 and Twitchell was sixth in 11:25.76. Sophomore Macey Black was eighth (12.80) and senior Rachel Posey 10th (12.89) in the 100 meters, Black finished sixth (25.53) with Posey ninth (26.05) in the 200 meters, and Weatherford was third (14.27) and junior Sarah Snapp fifth (15.16) in the 100 meter hurdles.
In women's field events Sunday, senior Chenelle Martin and freshman Rachael Johnson both cleared 5'-3” (1.60 meters) in the high jump with Martin judged sixth and Johnson seventh. Freshman Shelby Higginbottom placed third (18'-1.5”/5.52 meters) and freshman Kelly Steffen eighth (17'-10.75”/5.45 meters) in the long jump while sophomore Shalesa Smith was third in the triple jump (38'-7”/11.76 meters).
Sophomore Felisha Johnson placed third (49'-11.75”/15.23 meters) and junior Tara Perigo 10th (42'-11.5” (13.09 meters) in the shot put with senior Kelsey Hanley sixth (151'-0”/46.02 meters) and sophomore Kasey Kahle 10th (126'-2”/38.47 meters) in the discus.
The Sycamore 4x400 meter relay team of Higginbottom, Weatherford, Michl, and junior Kaci Smith set a personal best for the group and ran the 14th fastest relay in school history in finishing second with a time of 3:46.29.
In Saturday's competition, Johnson led a 1-2 finish for the Sycamore women in the hammer throw as she won the event with a distance of 189'-7” (57.78 meters) with Hanley second with a distance of 186'-3” (56.77 meters).
Sycamore junior Nicole Hope became just the second woman in Indiana State history to clear 13' in the women's pole vault as she finished third in the competition by clearing a personal best 13'-1.5” (4.00 meters). The pole vault results were updated and corrected overnight with Hope originally credited clearing 12'-7.5” (3.85 meters). Sophomore Richelle Kimble was seventh after clearing 12'-1.5” (3.70 meters).
Tuttle led a sweep of the top two spots for the ISU men in the 400 meter hurdles by the narrowest of margins as he won the event in a personal best time of 52.87, the seventh fastest time in school history. Jackson was just a hundredth of a second behind, placing second in a personal best 52.88 which ties Chris Norris (1991) for the eighth fastest in school history.
Senior Steven Swinford and junior Jeremy Pratt both cleared 15'-11” (4.85 meters) in the men's pole vault with Swinford placed fourth and Pratt fifth. Freshman Jordan Colanese finished third in the javelin with a distance of 165'-6” (50.44 meters) with junior Kevin Selby sixth at 138'-1” (42.08 meters).
In other results for the men on Saturday: junior Jeremiah Vaughan was sixth (3:58.51) and freshman Drew Gambill seventh (3:58.55) in the 1500 meters, junior Craig Padgett was fifth (14:58.56) and senior Tyler Kent 10th (16:05.15) in the 5000 meters, and freshman Justin Applegate threw a personal best 135'-11” (41.44 meters) in placing 11th in the hammer throw.
Tara Perigo finished fourth in the women's javelin with a distance of 109'-8” (33.43 meters).
On the track, sophomore Stacia Weatherford finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.00 while freshman Brittany Housel was fifth in 1:03.76, and sophomore Tori Stone was sixth in 1:05.46. Junior Kacie Klem led ISU in the 1500 meters with a ninth place finish in 4:48.31 while freshman Jessica Zangmeister led the Sycamores in the 5000 meters with a 10th place finish in 18:09.20.
The Sycamore 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Jasmine Milton, sophomore Macey Black, senior Rachel Posey, and freshman Shelby Higginbottom finished fourth in 49.67.
