ISU Grabs Two Wins at Tiger Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Indiana State softball team posted a pair of wins to open the Tennessee State Tiger Classic on Saturday, bringing its season record at 3-3 on the year. MacKenzie Connelly had a team-leading four hits on the day, including three against Alabama A&M in a 10-5 victory. Connelly also chipped in three runs and three RBI, and earlier had a homerun against Valparaiso to help ISU to a 6-3 win.

GAME 1 - Indiana State 6, Valparaiso 3
Alyssa Doyle and Stephanie Jonson both led the way against Valparaiso, as each finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Lindsey Beisser went 2-for-4. Meagan McCurdy (2-1) earned the complete-game, 6-3 win for the Sycamores, striking out four with no earned runs. Valpo's Shaleigh Jansen was charged with the loss after going one inning and giving up five hits and four runs.

ISU came out swinging in the top of the first, as Alyssa Doyle led off with a double to center. Alex Lucas brought the run across with a groundout to second, putting the Sycamores up with an early 1-0 lead. Valparaiso then countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but Indiana State's offensive effort stayed hot in the second. After Rachel McCleary reached on an error, Stephanie Jonson doubled to left center to plate her teammate, then scored herself on a throwing error. Beisser, who put a single in right, dashed in for the final run, giving ISU a 4-1 advantage.

The two teams did not score again until the fifth inning, when the Sycamores tallied another run from Bailey Wittenauer on a single by McCleary. In the seventh, ISU struck again, this time with Connelly's first career homerun down the leftfield line. Valpo mustered a final hit in the bottom of the seventh, but a 6-4 double play halted the effort and capped a 6-3 win for Indiana State.

GAME 2 - Indiana State 10, Alabama A&M
Indiana State opened strong in the nightcap, chipping in three runs in the first inning and totaling 12 hits as a team. Halee Myers and MacKenzie Connelly both nabbed first-inning bunt singles, and Alyssa Doyle and Connelly each crossed the plate to take an early lead. Bailey Wittenauer, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on an RBI single to left by Lindsey Beisser, making it 3-0 for ISU.

Alabama A&M responded with a two-run homer by Melanie Menchaca, but the Sycamores came right back in the bottom half, as Myers scored on a pass ball. The Tigers were quiet until a single run came across in the fourth on a fielder's choice.

Indiana State then exploded for four runs on five hits, beginning with back-to-back singles by Doyle and Myers. Connelly then dropped in a hit up the middle to score both runners on, and Wittenauer sent a two-run shot to center for the first round-tripper of her career to make it 8-4.

Despite an A&M run in the fifth, ISU extended its lead with a two-run, three-hit effort in the fifth. After a single by Kacy Kestner, Kellie Szablewski placed a bunt down the third base line to put two on base. Alyssa Doyle moved both runners over, and a grounder from Myers plated Kestner at 9-4. Kestner then scored to make it 10-4 - the Sycamores' most commanding lead of the season.

A final effort by Alabama A&M in the sixth saw Paris Sanders send a homer to center for the Tigers' final roar of the game, and Indiana State grabbed its third straight win of the season.

Kristen Felker (1-1) grabbed the win for ISU with four innings of work, surrendering just three hits and walking two with a trio of strikeouts. McCurdy also made an appearance in relief to earn the save, while Krissy Miles (0-1) took the loss for A&M with a six-inning effort in which she walked no Sycamore batters and gave up 12 hits.

Indiana State returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, facing Valparaiso at 10:30 a.m. (ET) and host Tennessee State at 3 p.m. at Tiger Field.
