Arizona Rallies To Hand Sycamores Third Straight Loss

TUCSON, AZ ? Colt Sedbrook's walkoff single to right scored the winning run as the Arizona Wildcats rallied to defeat the Indiana State Sycamores 7-6 in the final game of a three-game series Sunday.

Arizona had rallied from a 6-1 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth when Diallo Fon doubled with two outs and then scored on Sedbrook's walkoff single.

Indiana State had the measure of Arizona starter Eric Berger in the first inning, scoring three runs on two hits. Brady Shoemaker started a two-out rally with a walk and advanced to second on Brian Oliver's single. Nick Ciolli was issued a walk to load the bases and then David Brumagin came up, banging a triple down the right field line that scored all three runs.

The Wildcats threatened in the second as Dillon Baird led off with a single and T.J. Steele doubled. But the Sycamores stymied the threat with some great work by the ISU outfield. Shoemaker, playing left field, had to run in hard to catch a fly ball, almost colliding with Indiana State shortstop Pascual Del Real, for the first out.

After an intentional walk to load the bases, centerfielder Chris Schmidt made a shoestring catch of a line drive for the second out. ISU starter Micah Spencer then got Dwight Childs to fly out to Ciolli in right to end the Arizona threat.

Arizona had the bases loaded again in the third but could only get one run across. Diallo Fon led off with a double and went to second as Spencer was called for a balnk. Colt Sedbrook walked and stole second and after C.J. Ziegler grounded out, Baird was intentionally walked. Steele hit into a fielder's choice that got Baird out at second but allowed Fon to score from third. Gaston then grounded out to first to end the inning.

The Sycamores got that run back and more in the fourth. Brian Jett hit a one out single and then Del Real was hit by a pitch. That was all for Berger who was replaced by Mike Colla but he was not able to stop the ISU offense. Sean Osborne, Schmidt and Shoemaker each singled against Colla with Del Real and Osborne coming around to score, putting ISU up 6-1.

Colla was replaced by Ryan Perry who was able to get the final out of the inning.

Arizona rallied in the fifth to tie the game at six-all. Ziegler led off with a double and scored off a single by Baird. After Steele was hit by a pitch, Gaston singled in another run. The big blow against the Sycamores came next as Glenn blasted a shot over the left field fence for a three run home run.

Chris Schmidt had a pair of singles for Indiana State while David Brumagin had a triple, and Brian Oliver, Sean Osborne, Brian Jett, and Brady Shoemaker had a single each.

Nathan Inman (2-2) took the loss. He was the fourth Indiana State pitcher used in the game. Micah Spencer started and gave up six runs on eight hits before being relieved by Brian Oliver. Josh Varno also pitched to one batter in the eighth inning.

Indiana State fell to 10-20 on the season with the loss and will play at Ball State on Tuesday.
