CHARLESTON, SC ? The Indiana State Baseball team could not contain the College of Charleston Cougars in the opening game of a four game set on Friday, losing 13-1.
The Cougars are leading the nation with a 12.7 runs per game average and did not their fans, scoring four in the third and nine in the sixth in running past the Sycamores.
Indiana State did have the lead early in the game, scoring a run in the second. Brian Oliver doubled to right center to open the inning and advanced to third as Zane Chavez flied out to center. After Pascual Del Real grounded out, Sean Osborne doubled to center to score ISU's lone run of the game.
College of Charleston took advantage of two Indiana State errors in the bottom of the third to score four runs and take the lead for good. The Cougars broke the game wide open in the sixth, scoring nine runs on seven hits and two more Sycamore errors.
Michael Manus (0-3) started on the mound for Indiana State and went 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs (only one earned) on seven hits while striking out six and walking three. Nathan Inman and Josh Williams each took a turn in the sixth to try and stop the Cougars. David Gurbach worked the final two innings for Indiana State.
The Sycamores had just four hits on the night, doubles by Oliver and Osborne, and singles by Brian Ramirez and Gary King.
Indiana State (2-9) and the College of Charleston (12-4) will play two games on Saturday with the first contest starting at 12 noon.
