EUGENE, Ore. – Indiana State freshman thrower
Ben Brown recorded the Sycamores' second top-10 finish in as many days at the USATF U20 Championships, placing sixth in the shot put Friday evening at Hayward Field.
Brown's top mark of the competition measured 19.33m (63-5), with all six of his attempts at the meet traveling further than 60 feet. His top mark in Friday's competition was ahead of his 2025 ISHSAA state championship-winning mark of 19.25m (63-2).
Friday's performance wraps up a freshman season which saw Brown record top-10 performances in both the shot put and discus at the MVC Outdoor Championships. His top collegiate mark in the shot put of 17.65m (57-11) ranks just outside the top 10 in program history, as does his top collegiate discus mark of 53.06m (174-1). Brown's best performances came in the closing stretch of the 2026 season, as his top shot put mark came in the final regular season meet and his discus mark, which was a PR by five meters, came at the MVC Outdoor Championships.
Brown joined
Theo Thurmond as Sycamores to post a top-10 finish at the 2026 USATF U20 Championships, after Thurmond placed 10th in the discus Thursday evening.
Kieran Barnewall has an opportunity to add to the Sycamores' strong U20 performances Saturday, as the standout hurdler owns the top seed in the 110m hurdles entering the Canada U20 Championships.
