Indiana State honors senior class, closes regular season strong at Sycamore Open

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State recognized its senior class Friday in its final meet before the MVC Championships, as the Trees capped the regular season with 12 event wins at the Sycamore Open.
 
Aliseonna Garnett was responsible for a pair of those event wins in the shot put and discus, while Trent Jones clocked a top-five time in program history in the 400m on his way to an event win. The Sycamores swept the 100m and 110m hurdles for a second straight weekend, courtesy of Rachel Mehringer and Kieran Barnewall, while a quartet of distance runners in Halle Miller, Brittney Burak, Parker Mimbela and Eve Schurr also claimed first-place finishes on the track.
 
Sloan Cox and Lillian Gibbs joined Garnett as throws event winners with their first-place finishes in the shot put and javelin, respectively, while Campbell Roberts carried her consistency in the pole vault to another top finish in the event.

Sprints/Hurdles
Indiana State swept the top spots in the 100m and 110m hurdles for a second straight weekend, with Rachel Mehringer and Kieran Barnewall claiming first-place finishes for the second straight week. Mehringer, the only athlete in MVC history to break the 13-second mark in the 100 hurdles, ran times of 12.99 in prelims and 13.25 in finals to cruise to a first-place finish. Barnewall, the MVC leader in the 110 hurdles, ran times of 13.97 in prelims and 14.01 in finals to claim the win. Collin Forrest joined Barnewall in going under 14 seconds in prelims at 13.99, while David Carnell added a career-best 14.05 in prelims as the Sycamore trio ended up claiming the top three spots in finals.
 
Trent Jones made his last regular season meet one to remember, as the Sycamore senior ran a career-best time of 46.81 to claim the top spot in the 400m. Jones, who previously ran 46.97 and had a 45.98 4x400m split earlier this season, will close his Sycamore career in the top five in program history in the event.
 
Casey Hood Jr. continued his strong campaign with another top three finish in a short sprints event, as the 2025 Second Team All-American placed third in the 200m with his time of 21.47.
 
Mid-Distance/Distance
Indiana State's distance crew closed its regular season on a high note with four first-place finishes and the top collegiate athlete in multiple other events. The Blue and White received a pair of career-best efforts from Halle Miller (2:12.75) and Hallie Mimbela (2:13.77) to take the top spots in the 800m, with Nick Burns (1:50.77) and Xavier Wills (1:51.79) claiming top-three spots on the men's side.
 
The Sycamores also swept the top three spots in the women's 1500m with Brittney Burak (4:41.26), Emersyn Bland (4:45.13) and Alli Steffey (4:45.52) running podium times for the Trees. Jcim Grant ran a career-best 3:56.87 on the men's side as the top collegiate finisher, with Chris Angeles also adding a career-best 3:57.82 for a top-three finish.
 
Eve Schurr claimed a first-place finish for the Blue and White in the steeplechase with a time of 11:31.39, running a personal best by more than 10 seconds, while Parker Mimbela also claimed a first-place finish in the 5000m with a time of 15:28.61. Robyn Schemel ran a career-best 18:07.12 to place second in the women's 5000m, bettering her personal best by more than 20 seconds.
 
Jumps
Indiana State's pole vaulters led the way for the Trees in a relatively light week for the jumps group. Campbell Roberts and Amy Luttrell both cleared 3.87m (12-8.75) to take the top two spots on the women's side, while Lincoln Hulsey cleared 4.87m (15-11.75) for a top-five finish on the men's side. Kyler Kidd recorded an outdoor career-best mark for the second straight weekend with a clearance at 4.72m (15-5.75).
 
Essence Johnson and Kayla Douglas both recorded top-three finishes in high jump for the Blue and White, with the Sycamore duo both clearing 1.60m (5-3). Noah Gilmore and Ethan Widenhoefer earned top-five finishes on the men's side with clearances at 2.04m (6-8.25) and 1.95m (6-4.75), respectively.
 
Throws
Aliseonna Garnett continued her career-best season with a pair of first-place finishes for the Blue and White, taking the top spot in both the shot put and discus. Garnett's shot put mark came in at 15.55m (51-0.25), while her discus attempt measured 51.33m (168-5).
 
Emma Yoder recorded a career-best mark of 49.82m (163-5) to place second in the discus, and was also the top collegiate athlete in the hammer throw with her attempt of 59.19m (194-2). Olivia Marshall joined Garnett in the top three in the shot put with her mark of 14.09m (46-2.75).
 
Lillian Gibbs returned to the top of the javelin leaderboard in her first meet since the outdoor opener, recording a top throw of 42.21m (138-6) to claim a first-place finish.
 
 
Sloan Cox completed a sweep of the shot put titles for the Sycamores with a season-best performance, as his top throw of the day measured 17.87m (58-7.5).
 
Ben Brown also had a big day for the Blue and White with a collegiate-best mark of 17.65m (57-11) to finish second in the event, while also placing third in the open section of the discus at 48.02m (157-6). Theo Thurmond placed second in the invite section of the discus with his mark of 51.32m (168-4), and added a top-five finish in the hammer throw at 52.45m (172-1).
 
Former Indiana State All-American and 2024 Olympian Erin Reese had the big result of the meet, breaking her own facility record in the hammer throw with a mark of 76.76m (251-10). Reese, who also had a throw of 75.09m (246-4) during her field series, moved into the top three in the US and top 10 in the world this season in the event.

Indiana State sets its sights on the 2026 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Presented by the Terre Haute CVB. The Sycamores are the championship hosts for the second time in the last three seasons and fifth time in the last 10 editions of the championships, with this year's meet taking place May 16-17 at the Gibson Track and Field Complex.
