TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State softball's
Sophie Esposito was named this week's GoGo Squeez ISU Student-Athlete of the Week as announced by the athletic department on Monday afternoon.
Esposito's bat was key to the Sycamores sweeping Murray State this past weekend at Price Field in a key three-game Missouri Valley Conference series. The sophomore infielder hit .400 from the plate with a home run and four RBIs, while hitting safely and scoring in all three games over the series against the Racers.
Esposito opened the weekend tripling and connecting on a solo home run in Friday's opener as the Carmel, Ind. native went 2-for-3 from the plate in the Sycamores' 2-0 win. Esposito's solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning provided all the insurance pitcher
Hailey Griffin would need in the complete game shutout.
Esposito followed up with key at-bats in Saturday's doubleheader sweep. Her two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning broke the 5-3 game open and provided insurance runs late in the Sycamores' 9-5 opening win on Saturday afternoon at Price Field. She added an RBI single in the third inning in the 16-3 run-rule win to close out the series.
The Sycamores' sweep over the Racers marked Indiana State's first conference weekend sweep since May 5-7, 2023, when the Sycamores took all three games of the series at Valparaiso.
The GoGo Squeez ISU Student-Athlete of the Week will be announced every week throughout the 2024-25 athletic season.
