Multiple meet, facility records fall for Sycamores at John Gartland Invitational

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State closed its indoor regular season on a high note Saturday, claiming 14 first-place finishes at the John Gartland Invitational.
 
Rachel Mehringer shattered meet and facility records in both the 60m (7.52) and 60m hurdles (8.20), while Will Staggs did the same in the pole vault with his clearance of 5.46m (17-11). Every event group for the Sycamores tallied at least two first-place finishes, with the Indiana State throwers sweeping both the shot put and weight throw.

Rachel Mehringer broke a pair of facility records Saturday with the star sophomore shattering records in the 60m and 60m hurdles. Mehringer broke her own facility record in the latter event with a prelims time of 8.20, and went on to win the finals with a time of 8.28. Her 60m times of 7.60 in prelims and 7.52 in finals represented the two fastest times of her career in the event.
 
Mehringer wasn't the only Sycamore hurdler with a career-best day, as both David Carnell and Parker Doyle recorded their best-ever times on the men's side. Doyle clocked a time of 8.06 in prelims, and Carnell matched him with a time of 8.06 in finals as the Sycamore duo went 1-2. Kathryn Ison (8.87) and Kamille Gaskin-Griffith (8.89) completed a podium sweep in the women's 60m hurdles.
 
Indiana State also picked up a first-place finish in the men's 200m, courtesy of Ray Brodie III. After not competing last week, Brodie ran a time of 22.47 to finish nearly two-tenths ahead of the field, with teammate Matthew Wray (22.65) placing second. Krystian Dilosa earned a top-five finish on the women's side with a time of 25.91.
 
The Trees also earned a podium finish from Deangelo Hughey in the 400m, as the freshman placed third with a time of 50.95. Kai Dilosa had the top 400 time on the women's side for the Blue and White at 1:03.31.
 
Mid-Distance/Distance
Indiana State featured a pair of repeat winners from the distance crew, as Halle Miller and Gnister Grant took home first-place finishes for the second straight weekend. Miller clocked an 800m time of 2:17.23, the second-fastest of her career. Grant ran a career-best time of 5:02.31 in the mile, shaving four seconds off her previous best which was set one week ago.
 
The Sycamores also added top-three finishes in both the men's and women's 3000m courtesy of career-best times from Ryan Handy and Robyn Schemel. Handy placed second with a time of 8:31.74, more than 10 seconds better than his previous best in the event. Schemel's time of 10:39.15 was three seconds faster than her previous best.
 
Cannen Wolf had the top mile time on the men's side, placing fourth with a time of 4:28.17, while Jcim Grant also recorded a top-five finish in the 3000m with a career-best time of 8:39.63. On the women's side, Alli Steffey also placed in the top five in the mile with a career-best effort of 5:07.19.
 
 
Jumps
Will Staggs' record-setting season carried on, with the Sycamore All-American setting meet and facility records in the pole vault with his clearance of 5.46m (17-11). Parker Speth and Kyler Kidd both cleared 4.71m (15-5.5) to complete a sweep of the top three in the event, with Kidd's mark being a career best. On the women's side, Brooklyn Pfaff and Amy Luttrell both cleared 3.83m (12-6.75) to place in the top five, with Luttrell setting a career-best mark in the event.
 
Kevin Krutsch picked up another first-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 2.07m (6-9.75) as the Sycamores went on to sweep the top spots in the event. Kilan Macklin and Noah Gilmore both cleared a career-best 2.03m (6-8), while Amare Draughn cleared a career-best 1.99m (6-6.25). Ellie Irwin matched her career-best clearance of 1.72m (5-7.75) on the women's side, while Essence Johnson and Kayla Douglas both cleared 1.63m (5-4.25) as all three placed in the top five.
 
Indiana State went 1-2 at the top of the long jump leaderboard, as Piere Hill captured his second straight first-place finish with a season-best mark of 7.12m (23-4.5) and Ali Ilupeju recorded a mark of 6.88m (22-7) in his season debut in the event. On the women's side, Janiya Bowman matched her season-best mark of 5.79m (19-0) to place second and Justice Boston placed third with a mark of 5.40m (17-8.75). Boston added a win in the triple jump, her top event, with a mark of 11.69m (38-4.25), with Taylor Smith placing third in the event (11.06m/36-3.5).
 
Throws
It was business as usual for the Sycamore throwers Saturday, as Indiana State placed first in all four throws events. Noah Bolt had the notable mark of the afternoon for the group, as his weight throw career-best of 20.94m (68-8.5) put him in the top 40 nationally. Elias Foor recorded a mark of 19.37m (63-6.75) as the Trees took the top two spots in the event. The Sycamores also had the top two spots in the women's weight throw, as Niesha Anderson won with a mark of 20.66m (67-9.5) and Aliseonna Garnett had a career-best toss of 18.52m (60-9.25) to finish second.
 
Wyatt Puff continued his consistent form for the Blue and White in the shot put, placing first with a mark of 18.26m (59-11). Puff wasn't the only Sycamore over the 18-meter mark, as Sloan Cox recorded a career-best mark of 18.03m (59-2). Bolt rounded out the top three in the event with a mark of 17.20m (56-5.25). Garnett placed first on the women's side with a mark of 15.47m (50-9.25), the second-best mark of her career in the event. Anderson was runner-up with a season-best mark of 14.54m (47-8.5), while Olivia Marshall finished third with a mark of 13.94m (45-9).
 
Up Next
Indiana State looks to continue its MVC Championship run March 2-3 in Chicago. The Sycamores have won back-to-back-to-back men's indoor conference titles, and have also claimed two of the last three women's indoor conference titles.
