Noah Malone claims gold in T12 100m at Paralympic Games

EDITOR'S NOTE: Malone originally won silver in the event before the results of Turkey's Serkan Yildirim, the original gold medal winner, were disqualified. Malone was upgraded to the gold medal and will be awarded with that medal in a ceremony at the Stade de France, which will be conducted at a later date and time. The original story below has been updated to reflect these events.

SAINT-DENIS, France – Former Indiana State sprinter Noah Malone won a gold medal in the T12 100m Saturday at the 2024 Paralympic Games, marking the second straight Paralympics that he medaled in the event.

Malone will receive his gold medal in a ceremony at the Stade de France, with the date and time for that ceremony to be announced once it becomes available.

Malone ran a time of 10.71 in the finals and was originally pipped to the gold medal by Turkey's Serkan Yildirim by one-hundredth of a second. Yildirim's results were later disqualified, which upgraded Malone to the gold medal. His first-round time of 10.75 won his heat and was the fastest among all athletes in the field.

Below is the statement that U.S. Paralympics Track and Field received from World Para Athletics regarding the disqualification decision:

"On the morning of 30 August, World Para Athletics (WPA) was notified of a without notice interim injunction issued by a single judge in the Bonn regional court, requiring the NPC Turkey athlete, Mr Serkan Yildirim, to be entered into the Para athletics men's 100m T12 and 400m T12 medal events at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. WPA was not provided with notice of the proceedings, or any opportunity to participate in them.

Under both the WPA classification rules and the WPA qualification regulations for Paris 2024 an athlete with a Sport Class Status 'Review', such as Mr Yildirim, is not eligible to compete.

Solely in order to comply with the court order, WPA permitted Mr Yildirim to compete in the men's 100m T12 event, pending the outcome of WPA's appeal against the injunction.

WPA has now successfully appealed the injunction and the injunction has been lifted by the court with immediate effect.

The results of Mr Yildirim in the men's 100m T12 medal event have been disqualified, with all resulting consequences. The medals from the men's 100m T12 medal event will be reallocated.

WPA appreciates the patience and professionalism shown by the other teams and athletes affected by these proceedings.

WPA is unable to provide further substantive comment at this point in time."

Saturday's medal is the fourth Paralympic medal of Malone's career, as he won a gold and two silvers at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Malone was second in the 100m and 400m in Tokyo while winning gold as part of the 4x100m universal relay. It also marks his first Paralympic gold medal in an individual event, with his previous gold coming in a relay.

Malone is the third former Sycamore track and field student-athlete to compete in Paris this summer, as both Erin Reese (hammer throw) and Mary Theisen-Lappen (weightlifting) competed in the 2024 Olympic Games earlier in August. Indiana State was also represented in the Olympics by current swim and dive student-athlete Chloe Farro (50m freestyle), who was also Aruba's flag bearer.

Malone is still scheduled to compete in the T12 400m dash starting Wednesday morning, and is also in contention for Team USA's 4x100m universal relay which starts on Friday.
