Magill, Urdaneta sit among D1Baseball top-50 players at their respective positions

D1BASEBALL – Two Indiana State baseball players have been listed among the nation's best at their position according to the D1Baseball positional rankings as the website unveils its top-50 players at each position heading into the 2024 season.

Grant Magill (No. 42 catcher) and Josue Urdaneta (No. 44 second baseman) both made the list following standout seasons for Indiana State in a year featuring ISU's first trip to an NCAA Super Regional, as well as winning the MVC regular season, championship, and the NCAA Terre Haute Regional.

Magill returns as the reigning ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove winner following a standout 2023 season at the play. Last season, the Highlands Ranch, Colo. native coined the phrase "You do not run on Grant Magill" on the ISU social media platforms after a year in which he threw out 19 would-be basestealers while adding five pickoffs.

MVC teams only attempted 11 stolen bases against the Sycamores in the 2023 regular season with Magill nabbing six of them. He would go on to keep the opposition at bay in the postseason including throwing out two runners in the Fort Worth Super Regional opener at TCU.

At the plate, Magill finished the year with a .262 batting average with 54 hits over 206 at-bats, while connecting on 13 doubles and two home runs. His clutch hitting during the Terre Haute Regional included driving in seven of his 38 RBI over the three wins against Wright State and Iowa (twice).

Urdaneta also showcased his glovework on the field finishing in the top-three as an ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove finalist. Urdaneta earned All-MVC Defensive honors for the first time in 2023. The second baseman finished the year with a 0.993 fielding percentage over 269 chances. He led ISU finishing as a part of 40 double plays and finished second on the team with 173 total assists.

The Maracaibo, Venezuela native showcased his range throughout the season and was key to a Sycamore defense that was third in the NCAA team statistical rankings at 0.983. Urdaneta made just one error over his final 42 games on the field and was perfect over his 45 chances in the postseason.

He added a .267 batting average at the plate while finishing second on the team with 67 hits. He added 10 doubles, a triple, and a home run, while scoring 44 runs and driving in 26 RBIs.

D1Baseball will continue to announce their player positional rankings heading into the start of the 2024 season.
