TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Evansville scored four unearned runs off three Indiana State errors, including two in a ninth-inning rally as the Sycamores were unable to secure the series sweep over the Purple Aces with Sunday's 4-3 defeat at Bob Warn Field.
Tied 2-2 after the Sycamores (24-20, 10-5) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Evansville (16-25, 9-6) put its first runner on base as an error on a grounder up the middle put Reagan Reeder at first. Two batters later, Drew McConnell's bouncer in front of the plate was fielded and thrown down the right field line allowing Reeder to score on the play and put McConnell on second. Benji Kautto added an RBI single later in the frame to put Evansville ahead 4-2.
Indiana State was not done as the Sycamores rallied in the bottom of the ninth.
Weston Fulk was hit by a Chris McCormack (S, 3) pitch and advanced into scoring position on
Caleb Niehaus' single to center.
Carter Beck worked a full count before connecting on a line drive to the wall, but due to the Evansville outfield positioning, only Fulk was able to score on the single with Niehaus advancing to third with none out.
McCormack rallied to strike out both
Emil Estrella and
John Curl, before
Nick Sutherlin sent a line drive back through the middle, into the Evansville defensive shift for the final out.
The Sycamores took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on
Caleb Niehaus' solo home run to left field, before Evansville plated two runs in the top of the fourth courtesy of another Indiana State error. The Sycamores tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on
Nick Sutherlin's double to the left center wall.
Caleb Niehaus and
Carter Beck finished with three hits apiece from the plate with Beck connecting on a double, while Niehaus homered.
Caden Miller was on base three times in the contest with both Beck and
Jaxon Sparks recording stolen bases in the game.
Spencer Johnsen worked a career-high 7.1 innings on the mound allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out a career-high nine batters. He recorded at least two strikeouts in the first, third, and fifth innings in the career day.
