TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's golf hits the links for the first time in the 2022-23 season as the Sycamores will take on the deep field at the 2022 Redbird Invitational. The two-day, three-round event will take place at the Weibring Golf Club on September 11-12.
The Sycamores will be taking the course for the first time this season under Head Coach
Greg Towne, but there are a number of familiar faces in the lineup for Indiana State this weekend.
Molly Lee,
Kristen Hobbs,
Chelsea Morrow, and
Iyoun Chew will all reprise their roles in the Sycamores' top-five in the opening event. Freshman
Briana LeMaire will join the quartet after topping her teammates in qualifying rounds over the week.
Competition has been strong throughout the fall, but there is a different feel for the women's golf program this season as noted by Towne.
"Everyone has done pretty well so far this fall," Towne said. "We've had a pretty cohesive group out there on the course and the communication and comradery is among the best I've had while coaching here. All the girls are pulling for each other."
He continued, "We had a good challenge for our qualifying this week. We have a solid group that returned and all three of our freshmen really battled for positioning. It was good for the team and I look forward to seeing that continue throughout the season."
The Sycamores take on a deep field at the Redbird Invitational with up to nine Missouri Valley teams expected to be in competition at the event.
Weather could play a factor at the event with rain expected over the weekend. This includes a current 67-percent chance for rain on Sunday's opening two rounds.
Towne looks forward to seeing how his team competes through the adversity as they continue to develop this fall.
"We always look at using the first event of the season to give the athletes a barometer of where they are at," Towne said. "It's good for the kids to get experience in the collegiate golf game and learn where they fit in the competition. It also will help strengthen their mental game as we prepare for the weather."
