Sycamores set school mark in 200 Medley Relay on final day of weekend meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State closed out the weekend's meet against Missouri State and Miami University on Saturday afternoon as the Sycamores took on both institutions at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
 
Miami topped Indiana State 217-136 in the team scores in the dual meet competition format, while Missouri State picked up the 196.5-154.5 win over the Sycamores in the other competition. Miami topped MSU in the final matchup, 205-146.
 
"This weekend was a great opportunity to compete against two of the stronger programs in the Midwest, as well as get our first meet in tech suits," head coach Josh Christensen said. "Overall, I was really proud of how we competed and excited about some of the excellent performances we had. This morning had some big highlights with a school record and Zoe qualifying for Zones. On the whole, we did some major rewriting of our Top 10 All-Time list and had 30+ lifetime bests."
 
Indiana State shattered the school record in the 200-yard Medley Relay to highlight the final day of the weekend, while the Sycamores posted eight top-three finishes on the day led by Dorotea Bukvic, Marni Gray, and Zoe Smith. Bukvic posted a season-best 2:16.57 in the 200-yard Breaststroke to finish second in the field, while Marni Gray went 55.29 in the 100 Fly to touch the wall second. Smith eclipsed her previous season-high in the 1M diving with the junior posting a 265.95 to finish second in the field.
 
"This meet definitely provides some momentum and shows us we're on the right track, both with this season and our program as a whole," Christensen added. "We were also able to see the areas we need to keep growing and improving. We're looking forward to getting better from here!"
 
ISU took third in the opening 200-yard Medley Relay on with the quartet of Carmen Alard Vegas, Kaimi Matsumoto, Gray, and Chloe Farro touching the wall in 1:41.98 to finish third in the field. The quartet bettered the previous Sycamore school record in the event by .06 seconds set back at the 2020 MVC Championships.
 
The team of Madie Rutan, Elle Gilkerson, Alexandria Cotter, and Raine Boles finished sixth in the field in 1:44.60. The quartet of Tori Johns, Makayla Sura, Rebecca Shaffer, and Olivia Diruzza finished eighth in 1:51.48.
 
Esther Rydbeck Norden paced the Sycamores in the 1000-yard Freestyle event on Saturday afternoon as the junior posted a 10:13.36 to finish third overall. Molly Fogarty (10:17.70, 5th) and Andrea Putrimas (10:18.87, 6th) posted top-eight finishes in the field, while Haley Halsall touched the wall in 10:26.89 to finish 10th overall. Rhiannon Wozny took the final scoring position in the field with a time of 10:42.43.
 
Boles was the Sycamore leader in the 50-yard Freestyle as the freshman touched the wall in 23.75 to lead five Sycamores in the top-10 in the event. Alexa Szadorski (23.77, 5th), Chloe Farro (23.92, 7th), Peyton Heagy (24.10, 9th), and Kalli Agapios (24.19, 10th) rounded out the group in the field, while Jordan Gruce finished in 24.71 in the event.
 
Alard Vegas (56.74) and Rutan (56.81) finished 4-5 in the 100-yard Backstroke event to lead the Sycamores in the event. Diruzza finished seventh overall in 57.60, while Trista Bullock (57.97, 9th) and Katie Dougherty (58.18, 10th) rounded out the top-10 in the scoring.
 
Bukvic's second-place finish in the 200-yard Breaststroke was tops among the Sycamores in the field as the sophomore touched the wall in 2:16.57. Elle Gilkerson touched the wall in 2:21.69 to finish ninth, while Alexandria Cotter (2:25.34, 11th), Colleen O'Connor (2:27.14, 13th), and Makayla Sura (2:30.28, 14th) also placed in the scoring in the event.
 
Marni Gray added the Sycamores' second second-place finish on the afternoon as the senior finished second in the 100-yard Butterfly. Gray touched the wall in 55.29 in her signature event to lead the Sycamores in the field, while Boles finished in 56.05 to place fifth. Matsumoto (57.08, 7th), Rebecca Shaffer (58.25, 9th), and Sarah Moreau (58.54, 10th) all placed in the field.
 
Peyton Heagy was ISU's top placer in the 200-yard Freestyle as the freshman posted her second top-three finish in as many events. Heagy touched the wall in 1:52.33 to lead the Sycamores, while Gruce (1:53.08, 7th) was also in the top-10. Wozny (1:55.51, 12th), Putrimas (1:55.80, 13th), and Agapios (1:56.68, 14th) also placed.
 
Szadorski (4:25.47, 3rd), Dougherty (4:27.32, 4th), and Cotter (4:28.01, 5th) were all in the top-five in the 400-yard IM as the Sycamores showcased their depth in the field. O'Connor (4:32.78, 9th) and Fogarty (4:33.71, 10th) also took on the field in event to highlight the day.
 
The Sycamores put four teams in the field in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay event led by the quartet of Farro, Matsumoto, Heagy, and Szadorski taking third in the field in 3:25.59. Agapios, Gray, Gruce, and Alard Vegas finished sixth in the field in 3:31.45, while Putrimas, Bullock, Moreau, and Halsall finished eighth in 3:39.98. The final grouping of Shaffer, Rose Parsons, Wozny, and Kamila Nowak took ninth in the field in 3:42.75.
 
Four Sycamores took on the 1M Diving field paced by Smith's season-best result in event. The junior scored a 265.95 to finish second in the field, while Daniela Orta Castaneda finished fourth with 2:10.30. Bailey Betzer (201.95, 7th) and Sierra Bowman (175.80, 9th) rounded out the group in action.
