TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Left-hander
Geremy Guerrero pitched his second shutout of the season as he led No. 22 Indiana State to a 5-0 victory over Valparaiso at Bob Warn Field Friday afternoon. With the win, the Sycamores moved to 17-8 on the year and 4-1 in Missouri Valley Conference action while Valpo fell to 5-17 and 0-5 in MVC play.
Guerrero retired the first seven Valpo hitters he faced on strikeouts and before popup to third base ended the run. VU did not record a hit until the sixth inning of play when Brady Renfro led off the inning with a single to right. The Metamora, Ill. native retired 11 batters on strikeouts and allowed only two base hits over nine innings to improve to 7-0 on the season.
The Sycamores went for nine hits on the day, led by a 4-for-4 day at the plate from
Aaron Beck who fell a home run short of the cycle. Beck recorded three RBIs while
Josue Urdaneta and
Miguel Rivera added an RBI each.
Indiana State tallied three runs on three hits in the third inning, all with two outs on the scoreboard.
Brian Fuentes kicked off the rally with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a
Max Wright single. Rivera drove a 2-2 pitch to right center for an RBI double before Beck cleared the bases with a triple to the gap in left.
Urdaneta added to the ISU lead in the seventh with a single up the middle to score
Seth Gergely before Beck doubled in another insurance run in the eighth to cap off the scoring.
Riley Dent and Renfro recorded the lone Valparaiso base hits in the game.
Easton Rhodehouse went a scheduled two innings, allowing two base hits and striking out three. Ryan Mintz was charged with the loss, falling to 0-3. He allowed four runs on six hits over five innings.
The two teams will continue the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. ET.
Attendance will be limited to 500 (25% of 2000 seat capacity), with 140 on the ISU pass list and 60 on visiting team pass list. A total of 250 general admission tickets will be on sale for a price of $10. A total of 50 students will be admitted for free (student ID required) on a first come first serve basis once gates are open (30 minutes prior to first pitch).
The ticket window will open one hour prior to game time, 30 minutes before gates open. Fans will not be allowed along the first and third base lines to maintain social distancing from student-athletes.
