TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – No. 22 Indiana State baseball picked up a doubleheader sweep over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon at Bob Warn Field. The Sycamores took the scheduled seven-inning opener 11-2 before claiming a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Redshirt junior
Aaron Beck continued to swing a hot bat, going 6-for-8 with a double and four RBIs on Saturday while moving to 10-for-12 with seven runs batted in and a pair of doubles in three games against Valpo.
Josue Urdaneta finished the day 4-for-10 with a double and five runs scored from the leadoff spot while
Jordan Schaffer and
Sean Ross tallied three hits each.
Indiana State (19-8, 6-1 MVC) strung together 23 base hits while Valpo (5-18, 0-7 MVC) was held to just five over 16 innings. Sycamore pitching was strong once again, allowing just three earned runs on the afternoon.
Game One – Indiana State 11, Valparaiso 2
Right-hander
Connor Cline took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Valparaiso ended the bid with a double down the line in right – the lone hit allowed. The redshirt junior tossed 6.1 innings in total and allowed only one earned run to improve to 4-0 on the season. Cline struck out five Valpo hitters while also issuing five walks.
The Sycamore offense carried over from the series opener, tallying 14 base hits over six innings. ISU was led by the bats of Beck and Urdaneta who went for three hits apiece while Ross added two base hits.
Indiana State jumped out early with a three-run first inning before adding another run in the second. With the bases loaded, Beck drove in two with a single to center field before
Diego Gines picked up a base hit through the left side to plate another run. After batting around in the first, Urdaneta again led off the second with a single and was brought home by Beck as the Evansville, Ind. native tallied his third RBI of the day.
Seth Gergely launched a leadoff home run in the fifth inning – his second of the season. ISU then picked up three-straight singles from
Grant Magill, Ross and Urdaneta allowing Schaffer to single in a run with a base hit through the left side.
Miguel Rivera cleared the bases two batters later with a double to the gap in right before Beck tallied another RBI and an error at third allowed the sixth run to cross.
Ellison Hanna II hit for a pinch-hit triple to open the sixth and was brought home on a ground ball from Urdaneta to make it 11-0 in favor of Indiana State.
Colin Fields fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing three runs and walking six over three innings. Jonathan Temple recorded the only hit for the Brown and Gold with a pinch-hit RBI double.
Game Two – Indiana State 6, Valparaiso 2
ISU outhit Valpo 9-4 in the nightcap and was aided by four errors in the field by the Brown and Gold. Beck once again led the Sycamores at the plate with a 3-for-4 game, including a double and an intentional walk. The Sycamores picked up two runs each from Urdaneta, Schaffer and Beck at the top of the order as the trio combined to go 6-for-12 with two doubles.
Rivera drove in the games first run with a double down the line in right, scoring Beck who singled and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Valpo would later tie the game in the third inning when Brady Dent singled to left, scoring Angel DiFederico who led off the inning with a base hit.
ISU answered Valpo's run with the go-ahead run on doubles from Urdaneta and Beck in the bottom half of the third. The Trees went to work with two outs in the fourth, rallying to score three runs on one hit, two walks and a pair of Valpo errors. Urdaneta reached on a fielding error at second to jumpstart the rally before stealing second. ISU would score the first run of the inning on a Schaffer single before loading the bases on two walks. The Sycamores would then take advantage of a high popup that was dropped by DiFederico near home plate that allowed two more runs to score to cap off the inning.
Tristan Weaver improved to 2-2 on the season after striking out seven and walking two. The left-hander gave up just three hits and one earned run over seven complete.
Zach Frey finished the game for ISU, striking out three over two innings.
Trent Turzenski fell to 1-4 on the season after allowing two earned runs and walking four in 3.2 innings. Dent led the Brown and Gold with a two-hit game.

The two squads will wrap up the four-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
FAN ATTENDANCE & TICKETING POLICY
Attendance will be limited to 500 (25% of 2000 seat capacity), with 140 on the ISU pass list and 60 on visiting team pass list. A total of 250 general admission tickets will be on sale for a price of $10. A total of 50 ISU students will be admitted for free (ISU student ID required) on a first come first serve basis once gates are open (30 minutes prior to first pitch).
The ticket window will open one hour prior to game time, 30 minutes before gates open. Fans will not be allowed along the first and third base lines to maintain social distancing from student-athletes.
For the health and safety of the Indiana State community, those in attendance will be required to follow campus policies such as wearing a mask, practicing physical distancing, etc. The University will continue to monitor the conditions and evaluate the possibility of welcoming additional audiences.
