TOPEKA, Kan. –
Madie Rutan set a new school-record in the 100-yard backstroke event, while
Marni Gray and
Emily Webb also posted times among the tops in program history on day two of the Kansas Classic to highlight Indiana State's efforts at the Capital Federal Natatorium.
Kansas Classic (Morning)
Alexa Szadorski and
Alexandria Cotter were both in the top-10 in the women's 400 IM in the morning preliminaries to highlight the Sycamores efforts in the first event of the day. Szadorski came in at 4:25.86 to finish fifth in the field as the freshman knocked nine seconds off her previous best time this season. Cotter's 4:26.60 was sixth overall in the opening round and took five seconds off her previous mark set in the dual meet against Illinois.
Molly Fogarty (4:34.68, 19th) and
Makayla Sura (4:35.26, 20th) also knocked time off their previous season bests, while Anna-Maria Nasiou posted a top-30 finish with a time of 4:43.98.
Marni Gray posted a top-three finish in the 100 Fly as the junior came in under her season mark at 54.98. The time marked the third-fastest mark in program history sitting behind both of her marks set at the Missouri Valley Championships last season.
Kaimi Matsumoto was 26th overall in the field with a time of 57.79.
Emily Webb paced the Sycamores in the 200 Free as the senior posted a time of 1:53.11 to sit tied for seventh overall in the field.
Rhiannon Wozny finished 13th overall with a time of 1:54.37, while
Andrea Putrimas was in the top-15 following her 1:55.25.
Marissa Kozel (1:55.95, 17th),
Jordan Gruce (1:56.31, 20th),
Chloe Farro (1:56.58, 22nd), and
Rachel Sanqunetti (1:57.70, 25th) were also in the top-25 for Indiana State.
Szadorski (1:04.53, 10th) and Matsumoto (1:04.62, 11th) led the Sycamores in the 100 Breast event, while
Elle Gilkerson (1:05.31, 17th) was also in the top-20. Cotter (1:05.87) and Nasiou (1:06.01) finished in the top-25 in the preliminary round.
Madie Rutan (55.08) set a new school-record in the 100 Back and led the field in the event in the final competition in the morning session. The sophomore cut nearly two seconds off her previous best time to earn the top spot in Saturday evening's final round.
Trista Bullock (57.30, 20th),
Carmen Alard Vegas (57.48, 22nd), and Olivia DiRuzza (57.57, 23rd) were also in the top-25 in the event.
Kansas Classic (Evening)
The Indiana State "A" team opened up the 200 Medley Relay on Saturday evening finishing ninth overall in the field with Rutan (back), Gilkerson (breast), Gray (fly), and Farro (free) touching the wall in 1:44.42 to finish ninth in the field. The Sycamores' quartet of Alard Vegas, Nasiou, Matsumoto, and Webb finished in 1:45.01 to place 11th, while the team of DiRuzza, Sura, Bullock, and Kozel finished 21st overall in 1:49.09.
Szadorski continued her strong performance on the day as the freshman finished fourth overall in the 400 IM finals on Saturday night. She knocked another second off her time and posted the second-fastest time in school history with a 4:24.88 mark. Cotter was also in the top-10 in the event finishing in 4:26.88 to place seventh overall.
Gray finished second overall in the 100 Fly finals as the junior touched the wall in 55.26 to pace the Sycamores in the event.
Webb continued to cut time off her mark in the 200 Free as the senior posted the fifth-fastest time in program history in the event in finishing seventh overall in the field (1:52.01). Wozny finished in 12th (1:54.43), while Putrimas (1:54.83) was 15th to highlight the Sycamores evening.
Matsumoto posted a top-10 finish in the 100 Breast event to lead the Sycamores with a time of 1:04.75. Szadorski was 15th overall in 1:05.53, while Gilkerson finished 20th overall in 1:05.29 in the event finals.
Rutan placed fourth overall in the 100 Back to lead Indiana State in the event. She touched the wall in 55.26 to lead the Sycamores, while Bullock (56.74, 17th) and Alard Vegas (57.83, 20th) were also in the top-20 in the field.
Indiana State's team of Webb, Matsumoto, Gruce, and Szadorski placed seventh overall in the 800 Free Relay field to lead the Sycamores in the event with a time of 7:35.14. Cotter, Wozny, Bullock, and Putrimas combined to finish ninth in 7:39.94, while Kozel, Fogarty, Sanqunetti, and Rutan placed 15th in 7:53.84. The team of Colleen O'Conner,

Ellie Alexander placed 17th overall in 8:00.11.

The Sycamores swim team closes out the Kansas Classic tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. in Topeka, Kan. at the Capital Federal Natatorium.
