Tim McCaughan Named Interim Director of Communications

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales announced today (Aug. 17) that Tim McCaughan has been named the program's interim Director of Communications. His duties will begin immediately.

"Tim will provide steady leadership as we navigate through uncharted waters," Clinkscales said. "I am thankful for his willingness to serve in this role as we pull together to provide support for our coaches and student-athletes."

McCaughan joined Sycamore Athletics as the assistant director of communications in September of 2016. For the last two years, he has served as the primary contact for Sycamore football and baseball after spending his first two years working with the ISU volleyball, women's basketball and baseball programs.

He has promoted student-athletes and coaches to several postseason awards during his time at Indiana State, most notably linebacker Jonas Griffith, who earned six All-American honors during his career as well as Ryan Boyle who was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year. He also saw Sycamore head football coach Curt Mallory be named the MVFC Coach of the Year as well as a finalist for the STATS FCS Eddie Robinson award, which honors the National Coach of the Year. McCaughan played a role in the first Academic All-American award for Indiana State baseball since 2009 when catcher Max Wright earned the honor following the 2019 season.

McCaughan covered a nationally-ranked Sycamore baseball team in 2019 that picked up its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance after securing the No. 2 seed at the Nashville Regional following a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship -- the first in over 20 years for the program. After knocking off both McNeese and Ohio State, the Sycamores advanced to the regional final against No. 1 ranked Vanderbilt, falling to the eventual National Champion Commodores. He also promoted the MVC Newcomer of the Year in Collin Liberatore as well as the League's Defensive Player of the Year in Jake Means.

Prior to his time in Terre Haute, McCaughan served as the primary media contact for the volleyball, indoor track & field, men's and women's soccer and baseball programs at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. While with the Golden Eagles, he promoted a pair of All-American baseball players in Anthony Sequeira and Matt Whatley while also promoting Whatley to Freshman All-American status in 2014.

In two seasons with ORU, he saw the Golden Eagles win a pair of Summit League Championships and accompanied the team to its 25th and 26th NCAA Regional appearance, publicizing the club through press releases, game notes, media guides and social media.

Prior to joining the Golden Eagles, McCaughan spent one year as the media relations intern at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi where he oversaw the Islanders' women's basketball, baseball, track & field and cross country programs.

As an undergraduate, he spent four years as a student assistant with the media services department at Southern Illinois University. At SIU he oversaw the swimming & diving and women's tennis programs and was also a part of the game day staff for the Salukis' 16 other sports.

A native of Harrisburg, Illinois, McCaughan graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in sports administration and a minor in journalism in May 2014.

He is a member of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
