KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Thilda Staubo carded an opening round score of 74 on a rainy opening day of the Kiawah Island Classic which is a three-day, three-round event being held at both the Osprey Point (Par 72 – 5,984 yards) and Oak Point (Par 72 – 5,977 yards) Golf Resorts.
In the large, 49-team field the Sycamores posted an opening round score of 315 and are in 38th place overall. Coastal Carolina leads the event after firing an opening round score of two-under-par 286. Staubo's round of 74 represents a score of two-over-par and is tied for 54th place. There are well over 250 individual golfers in the field. She recorded back-to-back birdies on holes No. 3 & 4 as part of a one-under-par 35 on the front nine holes.
"This is about what we expected for the first time outside," head coach
Greg Towne said. "Thilda brought her 'A Game' and drove the ball awesome. Sophie came back and played well after a poor start. I am looking forward to good weather and good scores over the next two days."
Sophie Benetti was only four shots behind Staubo put in a large compacted field her score of 78 is tied for 128th place. She recorded birdies on holes No. 8, 14 and 17.
Sierra Hargens carded a round of 81 with a pair of birdies. Hargens is tied for 181st place.
Kayla Ryan became the third Sycamores of the day to birdie Hole No. 4 and her score of 82 is tied for 192nd.
Rounding out the field,
Abigail Irwin tallied a round of 94 which put her in 247th place.
The second round begins on Monday with a pair of shotgun starts -- the morning wave begins at 8:45 am (ET) and the afternoon wave is set for 1:15 pm (ET).
