TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State head basketball coach Greg Lansing announced today that Dawon Cummings has signed a National Letter Of Intent and will join the Sycamores as a junior in time for the 2012-13 campaign.
Cummings, a 6-4 guard, played each of the last two seasons at Coffeyville Community College for head coach Jay Herkelman.
"Dawon comes from one of the best junior college programs in the country and played for one of the very best coaches in the country in Jay Herkleman," Lansing said. "To be able to get a player of his caliber this late in the recruiting process speaks volumes of our program, mainly the type of guys we have on our team and the outstanding assistant coaches we have. They deserve all the credit. Dawon is very quick and athletic and will help us play faster like we want to. He is a very good all-around player that can really shoot the 3. He can play the point as well as off the ball. We are very happy to have DC join our Basketball Family. He fills a much needed void we have losing two senior starting guards in JP and Dwayne. He is an exciting player to watch."
Cummings, who played at Hogan Prep in Kansas City, Mo., was a Second Team All-Jayhawk Conference selection in 2011-12. He averaged 13.8 points per game and shot 35 percent from 3-point range as well as 78 percent from the free throw line. He led the team with 60 steals.
Last year, Coffeyville won the program's tenth Jayhawk East Championship over the past 12 years and finished with a 28-4 overall record. As a freshman, Cummings averaged seven points per game for a Coffeyville team which placed fifth at the NJCAA National Tournament and compiled a 33-5 record.
Cummings will join future Sycamores Rhett Smith and T.J. Bell, who signed during the early NLI period in November of 2011, as well as Mike Samuels, who signed a NLI on April 11.
