MADISON, Wis. - Indiana State junior Mary Theisen finished third in the women's shot put Friday at the Wisconsin Final Qualifier Open Meet but did not move up on the national performance list. Theisen's best throw 53-feet-2¼-inches (16.21 meters) can on her final attempt and lifted her to third in the competition.
Wisconsin freshman Kelsey Card won the event with a throw of 54-feet-10-inches (16.71 meters) while Purdue sophomore Dani Bunch was second with a throw of 54-feet-7½-inches (16.65 meters). Indiana senior Monique Riddick was fourth behind Theisen with a distance of 52-feet-10¾-inches (16.12 meters).
Theisen remained 23rd on the national performance list with the top 15 guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. The Sycamore junior had a personal best throw of 53-feet-3-inches (16.23 meters) in placing fourth at the MVC Indoor Championships. Card improved to 14th and Bunch 15th.
Five more members of the Sycamores will look to earn a bid to the 2012 NCAA Indoors at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier on Saturday. Sophomore Greggmar Swift will compete in the men's 60 meter hurdles with senior Nicole Hope and junior Richelle Kimble going in the women's shot put, sophomore Maurice Lyke in the men's long jump, and senior Ernest Rollins in the men's triple jump.
