SPRINGFIELD, MO. - The Indiana State Sycamores could not wrestle the momentum away from the Missouri State Bears as they fell 0-3 (19-25, 17-25, 17-25) in a Missouri Valley Conference contest Saturday night.
Morgan Dall led the Sycamore attack with 12 kills in 43 attempts but she was the only ISU player in double figure kills. Stacy Qualizza added eight kills in 15 attempts with Monique Morris and Molly Murphy each recording three kills.
Shelbi Fouty and Loni Mackinson continued to share duties as the Sycamore setter with Fouty recording 15 assists and Mackinson 14. Fouty also keyed the Sycamore defense with 17 digs while Mackinson had 15 and Kiya James 12. Samantha Kersting, Qualizza and Mackinson had two blocks each.
Indiana State stayed close to the home standing Bears early in the opening set but a 6-1 Missouri State run put the Bears out in front 8-3. The Sycamores were able to close the gap to four late in the set at 18-14 on a block by Morris and Kersting but they would not get any closer, dropping the opening set 19-25.
The Sycamores came out strong in the second set and built a 7-3 lead after a Dall kill on a Fouty set. Indiana State led 8-5 moments later before a 7-0 Bears run gave Missouri State a 12-8 lead. A pair of kills by Murphy cut the ISU deficit to two (12-10) but that was as close as Indiana State would get the rest of the set as Missouri State posted a 25-17 win.
The third set was all Missouri State as the Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Indiana State stayed close and trailed 11-13 after a Qualizza kill. The teams traded points until Missouri State a 4-0 run to pull way to a 20-14 lead. The Sycamores could not rally and dropped the third set 17-25.
Indiana State (7-5, 0-2 MVC) will look to break a two-game losing skid on Tuesday night when they visit the Chicago State Cougars in a non-conference battle with a 7 p.m. (ET) start. The Sycamores will host Bradley on Friday and Northern Iowa on Saturday in their next two MVC contests, both contests starting at 7 p.m. (ET) in the ISU Arena. Missouri State improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Valley with the win.
