Johnson, Tuttle Win Events On First Day Of Indiana Invitational Competition

BLOOMINGTON, IND. ? The Indiana State track & field teams are in fourth place after the first day of a very close Indiana Invitational with just 18.5 points separating first and fourth in the women's division and 16 points in the men's division. Action resumes in the Indiana Invitational, a quadrangular track meet between Indiana State, Indiana, Michigan State, and Missouri at 11 a.m. (ET) Sunday at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.

 

“It was not ideal conditions but we came here to compete,” Angie Martin, Indiana State women's track & field coach, said. “We had great results in the hammer throw and pole vault but did not fare as well in the other events. Hopefully, better weather tomorrow will give us a better attitude and we will have better finishes.”

 

Indiana leads the women's team race with 71 points with Michigan State second at 64.5, Missouri third with 48 points, and Indiana State fourth with 52.5 points. The Hoosiers also hold the lead in the men's division with 67 points followed by Missouri with 64, Michigan State with 52, and Indiana State with 51 points.

 

Indiana State sophomore Felisha Johnson led a 1-2 finish for the Sycamore women in the hammer throw as she won the event with a distance of 189'-7” (57.78 meters). Senior teammate Kelsey Hanley was second with a distance of 186'-3” (56.77 meters).

 

Sycamore junior Nicole Hope tied for third place in the women's pole vault by clearing 12'-7.5” (3.85 meters) while sophomore Richelle Kimble tied for sixth by clearing 12'-1.5” (3.70 meters).

 

Sycamore freshman Max Tuttle also led a1-2 sweep for the ISU men by the narrowest of margins as he won the 400 meter hurdles in a personal best time of 52.87, the seventh fastest time in school history. Fellow freshman Jonathan Jackson was just a hundredth of a second behind, placing second in a personal best 52.88 which ties Chris Norris (1991) for the eighth fastest in school history.

 

Senior Steven Swinford and junior Jeremy Pratt tied for second in the men's pole vault as each cleared 15'-11” (4.85 meters). Freshman Jordan Colanese finished third in the javelin with a distance of 165'-6” (50.44 meters) with junior Kevin Selby sixth at 138'-1” (42.08 meters).

 

In other results for the men on Saturday: junior Jeremiah Vaughan was sixth (3:58.51) and freshman Drew Gambill seventh (3:58.55) in the 1500 meters, junior Craig Padgett was fifth (14:58.56) and senior Tyler Kent 10th (16:05.15) in the 5000 meters, and freshman Justin Applegate threw a personal best 135'-11” (41.44 meters) in placing 11th in the hammer throw.

 

Tara Perigo finished fourth in the women's javelin with a distance of 109'-8” (33.43 meters).

 

On the track, sophomore Stacia Weatherford finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.00 while freshman Brittany Housel was fifth in 1:03.76, and sophomore Tori Stone was sixth in 1:05.46. Junior Kacie Klem led ISU in the 1500 meters with a ninth place finish in 4:48.31 while freshman Jessica Zangmeister led the Sycamores in the 5000 meters with a 10th place finish in 18:09.20.

 

The Sycamore 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Jasmine Milton, sophomore Macey Black, senior Rachel Posey, and freshman Shelby Higginbottom finished fourth in 49.67.
