TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State redshirt freshman Jake Odum has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer Of The Week by the league office following his standout performances against Illinois State and Drake. It marks the second such honor for Odum this season. Missouri State's Kyle Weems was named the league's player of the week.
Odum paced the team with a 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds as the Sycamores swept Illinois State and Drake. Odum hit 12-of-21 shots from the field (57.1 percent), including a pair of 3-pointers and was 7-of-11 from the free throw line. He added six assists and five steals over the two-game stretch. Odum opened the week by posting 13 points and eight rebounds at Illinois State, hitting 4-of-9 shots from the field and going 5-of-6 at the free throw line. He added two assists and three steals versus the Redbirds. He went on to notch his third 20-point scoring performance of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds in notching his first career double-double against Drake. Odum filled the basket up going 8-of-12 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. He added four assists and two steals versus the Bulldogs. Odum has reached double figures scoring in each of his last three games.
He also was honored as the MVC Newcomer Of The Week following his performances during the MVC Power Week which included three games against Illinois State, Northern Iowa and Drake. Steve McWhorter has also earned the league's top weekly honor for a newcomer once this year.
Odum has been more than just OK for the Sycamores this season as he is averaging 8.4 points per game so far. Additionally, he is leading the team with 97 assists and 45 steals. His 4.0 assists per game average is third in the MVC and is the best of any newcomer in the league so far this season while his 2.1 assist to turnover ratio is second in the league and is also the best mark of any Valley newcomer. Odum's 1.8 steals per game average is ranked first in the Missouri Valley Conference. In league games only, Odum's 4.9 assists is second in the league and his 2.2 steals per game are tops in the league. Odum set a new career high with nine assists (against just one turnover) in the 61-59 victory over Creighton. He also scored a career-best 22 points at Creighton.
Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday, February 16 when the Sycamores travel to Southern Illinois. Tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m. (ET) inside SIU Arena.
