Tunnell?s 22 Points Not Enough As Sycamores Fall To Shockers 76-70

WICHITA, Kan.  ? Senior Jay Tunnell did everything in his power to keep Indiana State's winning streak alive, as he scored a game-high 22 points in his home state against Wichita State.  Unfortunately for the Sycamores (9-20, 6-11 MVC), an 8-for-27 shooting effort in the second half helped the Shockers (15-14, 8-9 MVC) to a 76-70 win on Senior Night in front of a sellout crowd at Charles Koch Arena.

Indiana State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on its first possession as Harry Marshall drained a three pointer from the top of the key.  However, those would be the last points for the Sycamores for nearly five minutes, as the Shockers went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-3 at the 14:31 mark.  Tunnell stopped the bleeding with a jumper to cut it to 11-5, but the Shockers continued to roll by taking advantage of key ISU turnovers and widened their lead to 14 points at 26-12 after a three pointer by Reggie Chamberlain with 9:11 left in the half.

WSU continued to control the half and kept its lead at 11 points after two free throws by Ramon Clemente to make it 33-22 with 5:46 left in the half.  From there, it was all Sycamores as the team finished the half on a 13-2 run to tie the game.

Free throws made a big impact during the run for ISU, as two free throws from Jordan Printy and two more from Rashad Reed cut the WSU lead to seven points at 33-26.  Following a missed three pointer by WSU's Toure' Murry, Tunnell nailed a jumper to cut the lead to just five points with 4:19 remaining.  The Sycamores forced another defensive stop and Josh Crawford hit a three pointer from the top of the key to cut the Shockers' lead to 33-31 with 3:36 left in the half.

ISU had a chance to tie the game on a fast break layup by Aaron Carter, but the shot did not drop and the Shockers regained possession.  Soon after though, Marshall took a charge and ISU had the ball back with 3:00 showing on the clock.  On ISU's ensuing possession, Tunnell hit another jumper to knot the game at 33-33.  A layup by J.T. Durley gave the Shockers the lead back at 35-33 with 1:19 remaining, but a jumper from Tunnell tied the game at 35-35 with 48 seconds remaining and the game went into the break tied.

The Shockers came out of the locker room on a roll, scoring the first six points of the half to take a 41-35 lead just over two minutes in.  ISU battled back and cut the lead to three points at 43-40 after a jumper by Marshall, but the Shockers steadily increased their lead to 10 points at 57-47 after an alley-oop dunk by A.J. Hawkins with 8:15 remaining in the game.

The Sycamores came right back with a three pointer by Tunnell and a trey from Marshall to cut the lead to four points at 57-53.  From there, it became a free throw battle as both teams were in the double bonus and traded free throws.  ISU eventually cut the lead back to four point at 64-60 after a three from Printy with 3:12 left in the game and had a chance to cut it to one, but Tunnell's three point attempt rattled in and out of the hoop and Wichita State tacked on three quick points to go back up by seven points with 1:34 remaining.

The Shockers led by as much as eight points with 35 seconds remaining in the game, before Reed hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to five at 70-65.  ISU continued to foul and the Shockers iced the game at the free throw line to come away with a 76-70 win.

Tunnell's 22 point effort was his fourth 20 plus point effort in his last six games and he added seven rebounds for ISU as well.  Reed finished with 19 points, thanks to a 12-for-13 effort from the charity stripe, and grabbed six rebounds while Marshall finished with 11 points for ISU.

Indiana State wraps up the regular season at home on Saturday against the Missouri State Bears.  Tip off is set for 2:05 p.m. EST at Hulman Center, with Tunnell being honored prior to the game as the team's lone senior on Senior Day.
