Sycamores Drop Road Contest At Creighton, 73-62

OMAHA, Neb. ? Indiana State was looking to snap a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night in Omaha against a Creighton team coming off a disappointing loss to Drake.  However, the Sycamores (4-17, 2-8 MVC) shot just 35.8 percent from the field and the Bluejays (16-6, 6-4 MVC) scored 21 points off turnovers to secure a 73-62 win in front of a loud crowd at Qwest Center.

The two teams battled back and forth over the first six minutes of the game, with game tied at 5-5 after a made free throw from Jay Tunnell.  Creighton answered with six-straight points to take a six point lead, but Rashad Reed answered with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 11-8.  Two free throws from Aaron Carter then cut the lead to 11-10, before a layup from Justin Carter put the Jays back up by three points at 13-10 with 10:53 left to play in the first half.

ISU came right back and tied the game at 13-13 on another trey from Reed, but two straight jumpers by Creighton's Antoine Young put the Jays back up 17-13.  A three-pointer by Jordan Printy then cut the lead to 17-16 for ISU, but Young answered with a jumper to move the lead back to three points.  That lead would eventually grow to 22-16 after a jumper by Kenny Lawson Jr.

A three-pointer cut the lead to three at 22-19 with 5:30 left, but Booker Woodfox had the answer with a trey of his own to widen the lead to 25-19.  The Sycamores fought back and answered with a 6-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Carl Richard to knot the game at 25-25 with 1:23 left in the half.  Woodfox then nailed a jumper to put the Jays up by two with just over a minute remaining, but Isiah Martin hit the first of two free throws with a second remaining to make the score 27-26 at the half.

The two teams traded baskets to start the half, with a Carter jumper giving Creighton a 31-30 lead at the 17:55 mark.  Richard answered with a jumper of his own to give the Sycamores the lead at 32-31 and a layup by Martin gave ISU a three point lead at 34-31 at the 16:00 mark.  A free throw by Young then put Creighton back up by a point at 35-34, but a three-pointer by Carter gave the Sycamores the lead back at 37-35 soon after.

After Creighton regained the lead at 40-38 after two free throws by Woodfox, a three-pointer by Tunnell put the Sycamores back up 41-40 with 11:27 remaining in the game.  Creighton answered back with four straight points to take a 44-41 lead and would hold onto that lead until the 8:49 mark when Harry Marshall converted a traditional three-point play to knot the score for the seventh time of the game.

The Jays then went on a 7-0 run to take a 53-46 lead, before a three-pointer by Printy cut the lead back to four points with 6:14 left in the game.  From there, the Jays would steadily increase their lead to 11 after a free throw by Josh Dotzler with 2:25 left to play.  The Sycamores did not give up and cut the lead to eight points at 68-60 with 54 seconds left after Marshall converted another three-point play.

Creighton would go back up by 11 points at 71-60 after a dunk by P'Allen Stinnett, but the Sycamores were give two free throw attempts after a technical foul was called on the sophomore for hanging on the rim.  Printy converted both free throws to cut the lead to 71-62 with 30 seconds left, but a late layup from Woodfox gave the Jays a 73-62 victory.

Marshall led the Sycamores with 16 points, including a 7-for-8 performance from the charity stripe, to go along with seven assists.  Printy just missed out on tying his career high of 15 points, as he tallied 13 points in 32 minutes of action.

Carter and Woodfox led four Creighton players in double figures with 17 points apiece.  Stinnett chipped in with 13 points for the Jays while Young added 12 to round out the scoring.

The Sycamores return to action on Saturday, when they return home to Hulman Center to face off against the league-leading Northern Iowa Panthers.  The game will be a special one for ISU fans, as the 1978-79 Final Four team will be honored at halftime.  Tip off is set for 1:05 p.m. EST.
