TERRE HAUTE, IN ? Indiana State junior Brady Shoemaker had a record setting day for the Sycamores and his walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Indiana State to their first series sweep of the season with an 12-8 victory over Illinois State Saturday at Sycamore Field.
Shoemaker hit two grand slams in the game, a first for Indiana State, tied a school record with three home runs in the contest and set a new school record with 10 RBI in the game. The Brazil, IN, native also moved into fifth for RBI in a season, totaling 68 this year, moving in front of Tony Collins, who had 67 in 1985.
Shoemaker finished with three home runs in the game and four in the series with the Illinois State Redbirds. He has nine home runs for the season.
Beyond that, senior Chad Dawson, who took over in the pitching duties for Indiana State in the ninth inning, earned his first victory of the season.
The Sycamores entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 8-7 but had their rally caps on similar their 8-7 come-from-behind win over Wichita State on April 27 at Sycamore Field.
Gary King led off the inning with a single and advance to second as Ryan Strausborger walked. Pascual Del Real followed with a single through the left side of the infield to score King from second with the tying run.
Senior Chris Schmidt reached safely on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. On a full count, Shoemaker blasted the pitch from Illinois State reliever Kyle Nelson deep over the left centerfield fence for his second grand slam of the game and the celebration began.
The long ball provided the scoring in the first inning for both teams as Illinois State's Kevin Dubler hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Redbirds and early 2-0 lead.
Indiana State loaded the bases in the bottom of the first as Strausborger was hit by a pitch, Del real walked and Schmidt reached on an infield single. That set the stage for Shoemaker, who sent an 0-2 pitch over the 402 mark on the centerfield fence for a grand slam home run. It was Shoemaker's seventh home run of the season and his second of the series.
The Redbirds came back to tie the game at 4-all on a single by Quinn Ewert, a walk to Kevin Tokarski, and consecutive RBI singles by Mike Stalowy and Dubler.
After two scoreless innings, both teams pushed over one in the fifth. Dubler hit a one-out single for the Redbirds and scored on a double by Kyle Cherney to put Illinois State up 5-4.
Indiana State came back in the bottom half after Strausborger hit a one-out triple to left center and scored as Del Real grounded out to third.
Illinois State regained the lead in the top of the sixth when Ewert hit the first pitch he saw from Indiana State relief pitcher David Gurbach over the left field fence for a solo home run and a 6-5 Illinois State lead.
The Redbirds built an 8-5 lead after Dubler hit his second home run of the game, this one another two-run shot over the right field fence in the top of the eighth.
The Sycamores came right back in their half of the eighth as Strausborger belted his second home run of the game, this one a two-run shot to right field after Schmidt had reached on a walk.
Dawson came on to pitch against Illinois State in the top of the ninth, giving up a lead off double to Kevin Konsler. Ryan Court advanced Konsler to third with a sacrifice bunt but Konsler tried to score on the play.
Strausborger, who took the throw from Sycamore catcher Sean Osborne to get Court at first, quickly relayed the ball back to Dawson, who was near home plate and the senior pitcher was able to tag Konsler out before he got to home plate. Corey Maines lined out to Shoemaker in left field to end the Redbird threat.
The Sycamores finish the season with an 18-32 record overall and 9-15 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference, finishing seventh overall in the league. Indiana State also ends the season with their longest winning streak of the year at four games.
