OXFORD, OH ? The Indiana State Sycamores took advantage of a pair of Miami (Ohio) errors and a wild pitch to score three runs in the top of the eighth inning, defeating the Redhawks 8-5 in a non-conference game Tuesday.
The Sycamores 12-23 overall, will travel to Bloomington, IN, on Wednesday for another non-conference battle starting at 4 p.m. (ET). Indiana State returns home for a three-game weekend series with the Wichita State Shockers with the first game at 6 p.m. (ET) Friday.
David Brumagin accounted for the first five Indiana State runs. Brumagin had a two-RBI single in the first inning, added a two-RBI double in the third, and then sacrificed in a run in the fifth.
Brian Ramirez got a one out single to right in the first and advanced on a wild pitch. Brady Shoemaker was hit by a pitch and Nick Ciolli walked to load the bases, giving Brumagin the opportunity. The senior delivered with a single to center, scoring Ramirez and Shoemaker.
In the third, Ramirez led off with a walk and advanced as Shoemaker singled through the left side. Both advanced on a Ciolli sacrifice bunt, putting both runners in scoring position with two outs. Brumagin came through for the Sycamores again, banging a double right center.
In the fifth, Chris Schmidt led off with a single to right center and then stole second. After Shoemaker walked, Schmidt went to third as Ciolli hit into a fielder's choice that got Shoemaker at second. For the third time in the game, Brumagin came to the plate with runners in scoring position, and again delivered, this time with a sacrifice ground out to second that allowed Schmidt to score.
Miami countered the Sycamore offense with two runs in the bottom of the second off a Jon Edington two-run home run. Two more came across in the fifth off a walk, a double and a single with the Redhawks tying the game in the bottom of the sixth with a single run.
The eighth opened with Brian Jett reaching on an error by the Redhawks right fielder and Pascual Del Real hitting a single. Both runners advanced on a Sean Osborne sacrifice bunt while Ryan Strausborger walked to load the bases.
Ramirez reached on an error by the Miami second baseman with both Jett and Del Real coming around to score on the play with Strausborger advancing to third and then scoring on a wild pitch.
Brendan Smith, the third ISU pitcher on the night, took over with one out in the sixth and shut down Miami in the final 3.2 innings. The Sycamore junior picked up the win and improved to 2-1 on the year.
David Gurbach started and went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Chad Dawson worked just a third of an inning and was charged with a run on one hit.
Brumagin had a double, single and five RBIs in the game. Ramirez, Schmidt, Shoemaker, Ciolli, Del Real and Bronco Lafrenz had a single each.
