TUCSON, AZ ? Indiana State grabbed the early lead but could not contain the Arizona offense as the Wildcats scored 10 unanswered runs in defeating the Sycamores 10-2 in the opening game of a three-game series Friday night.
Indiana State (10-18) and Arizona (18-11) will meet at 9 p.m. (ET) Saturday in the second game of the series which wraps up on Sunday with a 3 p.m. (ET) game.
The Sycamores jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Brian Oliver led off the inning with a walk and advanced when Brian Jett singled into right field. Both runners advanced on a David Brumagin sacrifice bunt with Oliver scoring the first run of the game off a Pascual Del Real infield single.
ISU starter Michael Manus struggled early in the second, giving up a pair of walks and a triple to Arizona's Dwight Childs that put the Wildcats up 2-1. Arizona added another run off a Sycamore error to take a 3-1 lead after two innings.
The Sycamores had a chance in the third after Chris Schmidt and Brady Shoemaker both singled but both were left stranded.
The Wildcats padded their lead by one in the bottom half third, then added two more in the fifth with back to back solo home runs, three more scored in the sixth and one in the seventh as Arizona built a 10-1 lead.
Indiana State got their second run in the top of the eighth as Nick Ciolli led off with a triple that hit the wall in deep left center and then scored on a Brady Shoemaker single.
Del Real had a double and a single to lead the Sycamore offense while Shoemaker and Brian Jett had two singles each, Ciolli a triple that extended his hitting streak to 14 games, and Schmidt added a single.
Manus fell to 1-5 on the season with the loss.
